Decided to preorder a 1700x and 1800x from Microcenter. I'll watch the reviews and keep the 1700x if it seems to oc as well as its bigger brother. Still deciding on a motherboard but leaning towards the Crosshair VI or Taichi. For ram I found the Trident 3200 CAS14 set for $145 shipped on Amazon yesterday. Everything else I'll reuse from my current rig.

So excited to see such a big shake-up in the CPU world. It's been so boring for the last 5+ years.

IEC, three RX480s????

You would be surprised how many 480s are owned by some of the forum members here. Serious ETH/ZEC miners have . . . many many GPUs.

Hell I'm a piker, and I have like 10 Hawaii cards chugging away. I never did upgrade to Polaris.

On a side note I have decided to switch thermal paste to Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut for this build. Amazon has $50 tubes of 5 grams, so I got one of those. Yeah it's a lot for TIM, but that stuff should last . . . basically forever.

As much as I love CLU, I find that it does not store well once I crack open the syringe. I think I still have a few applications left, and I could even test the two against one another on a limited basis, but maybe not well enough to produce usable data.

Also remounting is a headache. We'll see.

I am feeling a bit mixed over this. Excited to finally upgrade from my FX 8350, however I have never spent this much on a PC before.

Ryzen 1800x $499
Asus Rog Crosshair VI hero board $250
G Skill RGB DDR4 3600 ram 8GB x 4 $409
Intel 1tb NVME solid state M.2 drive $349
corsair RM750i power supply $124
fractal design R5 case $99
Asus blu ray combo dvd burner $40
rosewill card reader and usb type c front panel $30
Aura led strip kit $33
pulling a few 2 tb hard disks from my old rig
and reusing my nvidia gtx960 for now until vega comes out and decide between that and 1080ti

$1,851.00 not counting video card................. that's a lot of scratch spent on a PC
I know I could have cut some corners on this, but I felt in the long run this would be the best mix of parts for the workloads I use this for , gaming is only a small part of the need for this.

Maybe you could save some money on the RAM? That stuff gets expensive past 3200mhz.

moonbogg, you will be fine. Have both the 1800x cpu and the Asus Crosshair Vi pre-ordered. Already have 2x8G of Gskill TridentZ DDR4-3200; Win 10 Home USB;Corsair MP500 M.2 2280 480GB. Will be using an EVGA 850 BQ PSU; 2 Sapphire RX480-8G reference gpus in CF. The CPU will be cooled by an EK Supremacy EVO with AM4 adapter plate and have 2 360 mm Magicool slim rads with XSPC 1600rpm fans controlled by a 6 channel controller. I went with a Thermaltake V51 case.

I'll keep you posted with my build after I receive the cpu and motherboard.

Thanks. Nice to see you jumping aboard the hype train as well. I'm looking forward to it. Sounds like you are going whole hog with this thing.
I am looking to convert my existing Supremacy EVO to be used with the AM4 board, so I will be getting a back plate and mounting bracket. Not sure if I need new mounting hardware though. I emailed EK and asked them.
I got some Corsair 3200 ram with fancy RED LED lights. I had to have the LED lights. Science sais it makes it go faster. Also found a good PSU for a decent price. The EVGA Supernova 1000w G3. $160, has a shorter length for a bit more room in the case and plenty of power incase I decide to go SLI again later. 10 year warranty on that PSU as well. Set it and forget it with a warranty like that.
How long do the D5 pumps last? Wondering if I should go ahead and get a fresh new one, even though I haven't had mine all that long.
Also wondering about windows 10. I bought windows 8 and am currently using the free windows 10 upgrade. Can I migrate it to the new rig or do I have to buy windows again?

So I have so far committed to and purchased:
1800X
Crosshair VI
PSU
RAM

Just need some miscellaneous items to finish up. CHOO CHOO!!!! Full steam ahead gentlemen!

Populating 4 DIMM slots like that will restrict him to memory speeds of ~DDR4-2400 on nearly every board out there. So I hope he's in for some RAM tuning . . .

Yeah that's what I've read. I'd go with two 16GB sticks, but I suppose BIOS updates could save the day...some day.

Ofc you could save on a bunch of things, starting with the CPU,mobo and so on but i see 2 major problems.
The DRAM, 4x8GB is restrictive in case of future expansion and you pay a huge premium vs 2x16GB 3200.
Populating all slots it's also a bit limiting on speeds, you can always push a bit higher with just 2 modules.
I see a 2x16 GB Trident 3200 CAS 16 at 185$ right now https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232196

That SSD, i assume it's Intel 600p given the price and it's just slow.
You would be better off paying a bit more for something faster or less for SATA or using 2 drives a fast 512GB PCIe x4 and a SATA SSD.

Where is this information coming from? Asking the question, since there isn't anyone who has run these new boards and chips to even tell what can and cannot be done with the memory? From what I have now read since ordering the 3600 ram is that the boards generally overclock to 3200, but that just means I can tighten up the timings and run the ram at a slower clock to get it working. With the tighter timings making up for the drop in clock speed right?

This is coming from the the likes of Asus who say that early BIOSes have some issues with running XMP when all slots are filled. You can go the AsRock Taichi X370 product page where they list what speeds you can run at different configurations. Also, not every memory would be QVL approved so you will have to look for BIOS updates all the time before things become more normal.

Anyone know if ryzen will have ecc support ?
The indication is that it may not, as ECC modules are supported but they run in non-ECC mode. This is based on the (incomplete) manual for AsRock boards. Not sure though, since AMD has not said anything yet on the official memory specs of Ryzen.

seems like worst case scenario I will have to clock down a bit and see what happens in the long run, which isn't so bad.

I noticed the same on the gigabyte board. Hopefully I don't have to wait till sometime later in the year for the server parts.
I'm interested in building a workstation rather than a gaming pc with flashy leds and would like to do it immediately

Ordered yesterday an 1800x and an Asus Crosshair. Looking forward to build the new rig in early march.
Will be an decent performance lift from my FX6300.

That will be sweet! that mobo looks the way to go, either that one or taichi according to overclockers shop.

moonbogg: I'll try to answer questions in your reply to me. Is your D5 ok? If it's running now without problems, Don't touch it. D5s are built like tanks so it is probably fine. If you have the posts for the AM3 in your Supremacy EVO kit (I'm pretty sure they include them) all you need is the adapter plate for AMD4. If your Supremacy EVO original kit came with an AMD3 plate you are fine. They are using the same plate but drilling a new set of holes to align with the AMD4 holes. In fact since the Asus Crosshair VI has 2 sets of hole for both AMD3 and AMD4 mounts you probably could just use your AMD3 mount plate. Be careful when you switchout from the Inte mounting plate to the AMD one. You have to remove the 4 screws from the copper heat plate and the rubber seal. make sure you also change to a different jet plate. PM me and I'll explain more or give you a call. I had ordered a new EK Supremacy EVO recently and it shipped with the AMD3/4 plate so I already switch out and can walk you through it.

Finally as to "reusing" a free Win upgrade, my good man open up that pocketbook and hit up Newegg for a fresh new Win 10 OS. I ordered the Win10 Home 32/64 USB kit for $129 that come in the Microsoft box so you can boot right off of the USB stick. Much easier. I suspect your wife will be ragging you about why you need to upgrade anyway. Buy her a $150 Talbot's gift card.

Don't cheap out on the OS.
P.S. Your twin 980TIs under water should run very well since that Asus Crosshair VI specifically supports SLI. Smart move. I'm going to run my simple 2 RX480s in CF so I can finally have an all AMD high end rig.

You can see it listed in the specs at the board manufacturers website.

I guess the main question is, why are you paying that much of a premium for that over a nice set of 2X16 and then skimping so much on the SSD? 2X16 + 960 PRO or EVO would be much better than what you are getting.

So as long as I have DDR4 2400 it will be ok if I use 4 sticks but any thing higher then this I can only use 2 sticks?

Yes for launch, also means you can add to your memory down the road.
Why not just go 2 x 8gb 3600mhz? You can bump it up when you have spare cash/prices come down.
I would also go 256gb M.2 and a samsung 960 pro 1TB drive combo.
What cooling you using?

Oh it's because I am coming from a Skylake build and I will be reusing the Ram I already have which is DDR4 2400 4x4GB Crucial Ballistix White. But once the bios on the motherboards mature and enable high Ram Speeds with more then 2 sticks I will upgrade and buy faster and higher storage Ram. I was hoping for DDR4 4200 but guess thats out of the question for now.

Cool, well that should be good as long as you get the timings right, zen is rumored to have a 28% more efficient IMC than intel.

Well I really really hope its really a bios problems hold back the amount of sticks of memory being able to be used and not a IMC problem. It seems there are problems like this out of every generation released and the only fix is a new socket and cpu refresh. Hope that is not the case this time around.
