I installed all my components and got everything working with no fuss at all. Just go to set up Fedora 25, the live usb detected all the components. I am gonna do that tomorrow to get some sleep, it always takes me a few hours to configure distros to be just the way I want them. Happy Ryzen Building everyone!

Received my Ryzen R7-1800x yesterday from Newegg and also received the new AM4 backplate from EK.

However, like everyone else it seems, who pre-ordered an Asus ROG Crosshair VI mb on Amazon (had a gift card and my wife is a Prime member) I'm in limbo (us oldie moldies know what that means). I pre-ordered on 2-23 and paid for 1 day shipping but that obviously means nothing. OH WELL! I have plenty of time to read the reviews!

I get the AMAZON "party line" that my ordered has been received and I'll receive an e-mail when it ships.
The old adage of "misery loves company" appears to be true here.

My other parts for the build are:
Ram: Gskill Red Dual 2 x 8gig DDR4-3200 CL16-18-18-38 1.35v Model#F4-3200C16D-16GTZB
Storage: Corsair MP500 M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe Gen.3 x 4 ssd-480GB
OS: Microsoft Win 10-64 Home USB3.0 kit. (my case does not have space for internal DVD due to using 2 WC rads)
DVD: External Asus USB
GPU(s) 2 Sapphire Reference RX480-8g gpus in CF
MB: Asus ROG Crosshair VI ( whatever week-month it decides to show up from Amazon!)
Case: Thermaltake V51
Cooling: cpu only EK Supremacy EVO cpu block with AM4 adapter and backplate with 2 360mm Magicool slim rads and 6 XSPC 1600rpm 120mm fans controlled by a Kingwin FPX-006 six channel fan controller modded to fit in the 5.25" bay. My pump/res combo is an EK D5-140 vario combo that has been running for the last week. Using 1/2" x 3/4" clear flex tube (buy all water cooling parts new from PC Performance)

The obvious question is why so much rad space for just a cpu?

First I had a 420 and 360 combo in the case but I felt it did not give enough room for the motherboard. Second, though I will now be running 2 RX480s in CF to achieve an "all AMD cpu/gpu" combo, I might spring for a high end Vega and custom water cool it in the future - thus the extra rad space.

From reading the reviews, it appears the Ryzen 7 has VERY limited OC headroom, unlike my 5960x below. However, when I custom water cool I tend to over rad to allow myself the ability to keep fan speed lower. The cooling needs for the Ryzen seem to be modest but custom water cooling is fun for me.

Why not put waterblocks on the RX480s? Cost per card (I paid @$240 for each) for EK waterblocks doesn't justify the expense. They are @$110 each before fittings. XSPC makes a Blade gpu block that is @$70 per block but does not actively cool the VRM.

Well. I'll keep you posted on the build if and when the mb ever comes in.

From what I read, the 1800x runs ALL 8 cores natively at 3.6 BUT also can OC a few cores as high as 4. If you OC the 1700 to 4.0 you probably exceed a 1800x at stock.

Well, if I overclock the Ryzen 7 1700 to 3.6 GHz, do I still keep Turbo?

I am not a huge fan of pushing it to its limit.

I got my Asus B350 motherboard. I haven't assembled my build. Interestingly it says on the box that there is support for ECC memory. Not something I use, but an interesting feature none the less.
Let me know how you set cpu voltage in bios? And heck even ram voltage.
Lol. It is a mess for me on a asus b350m. And the memory profiling is still borked like crazy.

I will run stock until next bios update or two. I am tired of messing with this buggy stuff.

No you dont. But cranking it to all core 3.7 should be doable on all cpu and can be done at safe v levels and sane total tdp comparable to say 4c 4.7 7700.
But we have to consider the need also. Do you need all that througput perf a 8c 3.7 gives?
1700 at stock is isanely efficient. Its tons of power in 65w tdp. And you still have single core boosting to near 3.8.

Does overclocking disables Turbo?

http://www.pcgamer.com/the-amd-ryzen-7-review/6/

I ask because somebody here like to say: "Oh! Just get the Ryzen 7 1700 and overclock to 3.6 GHz and it'll be like the Ryzen 7 1800X".
Yes. Any overclocking shifts the CPU into "OC mode", which locks it in the P0 power state. disables turbo, and disables any power saving mechanisms implemented. As such, OCing to less than the max boost clock of your chip will cause you to lose ST performance.

I was just about to install the CPU on the motherboard when I realized (why it didn't occur to me at the store, I don't know... I was short on sleep, so maybe that's why) the box for the CPU is a little light considering it's supposed to include the Wraith cooler. Picked it up, looked at the label and it says 1700X.

Double checked the Micro Center receipt and they apparently did ring it up as a 1700 at $329.99 (and $269.99 for the MSI X370 XPower Gaming Titanium, which got $30 off for the combo deal), but they gave me the 1700X instead.

Not sure how I feel about this as I did originally plan on getting the X several weeks ago, but now I definitely have to wait for the water cooler to arrive. Also I was kind of looking forward to the plain jane 1700 even more after reviews and benchmarks, but it's not worth going back to Micro Center for an exchange and the hassle. Can't really complain either about getting a more expensive item, I guess.

Finally got my Crosshair Mobo, now just waiting on the case, cpu and a replacement for the faulty quick disconnect valve I was sent. Should have everything by Tuesday now.

These parts are like gold dust in the UK

Why do you have two different GPUs in the same build?

Other than that, it looks like a very nice PC
I already had these 2 GPUs. I bought them separately. I originally wanted a 480 4gb, but those things were practically ghosts when the RX 480 launched. So, I settled for a 470, and then a couple months later there was an insane deal for the 480 4gb for only $155, and I couldn't pass it up. I put the 470 into another rig, and patiently started waiting for Zen.

I was originally planning on a 6 core, but I got tired of waiting. I feel for AMD's Trap card, and upgraded my purchase to the 1700 last night.

I have to wait, amazon.de does not have anything and mindfactory.de have only the RAM and the power supply.
no B350/R7 1700
In the meanwhile I am still researching ... if I there is a chance more gains would be available from BIOS + SW patches
But...
R7 (€ 360 ) + MSI B350M Mortar (€ 99) + Corsair CX 500 (€ 49 ) + Intel 600p 512GB (€177) + XFX RX 480 GTR (€250) + Corsair Vengeance 16 GB CL15 (€137 ) = € 1072

6900K = €1099

Now waiting

Theoretically that would be a higher leakage chip, so the water cooling should help.

I'm still holding out for 4.2GHz under water for my 1800X. Might take some BIOS updates and tweaking for that to happen however. Tuesday can't come fast enough (Asus C6H arriving then)

4.0GHz seems practically guaranteed since even some 1700 are hitting that speed.

That's correct. 1800X will only turbo boost up to 2 cores to 4.0GHz. If you hit 3+ core load then it defaults to 3.7GHz all core turbo with XFR enabled.

If you OC the 1700/X to 3.7GHz all-core, it will match a 1800X in 3+ core workloads.

If you OC any Ryzen to 4GHz+ all-core, you will beat a 1800X by 8.1%+ in 3+ core workloads.

Just completed my build. A few observations/thought so far.

-At first, my 3000 MHz RAM would only work at 2133 MHz. Trying to change it to even 2400 MHz just caused the system to reset with the message "Overclock failed!". However, after I selected Asus OCCP (or similar abbreviation, not in BIOS now so can't check), it changed the memory to 2993 MHz, automatically increased the RAM voltage to 1.35V and automatically adjusted some timings. The system then booted with RAM at 2933 MHz and seems stable so far (no memory stress tests done yet).

-Temps are completely bugged currently. With the original BIOS, it showed an idle temp of 34C in BIOS, which seems about right (maybe a little high?). After BIOS update, it shows 56C idle. However running stress tests like AIDA64 FPU, Prime95 etc., it climbs to about 72C, which seems fairly normal. So I think the idle temps are just bugged at the moment.

-If you select High Performance energy saving profile in Windows, you can see in CPU-Z that it still undervolts the CPU, as low as 0.3xx V. However, it never downclocks the CPU to less than 3.6 GHz. I'm going to check with a power meter at the plug whether there's any actual difference in power consumption between balanced (which downclocks the CPU) and High Performance. I think SenseMI works with clock gating rather than actual frequency adjustments.

-I can't seem to find a way to turn off HPET. Supposedly doing this improves performance with Ryzen, so I would like to have the option.

Well, I have decided to get a 1700, but I want the $150 ASRock mobo, and newegg does not have it, and my favorite cooler says "coming soon" for compatability with AM4, here:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N83YW8228

And I have heard that somewhere around 2666-3000 is the fastest you can get for ram that works, but get tight timings. Any recommendations here ?

I am waiting on the full build until I get my cooler, not paying $90 for the noctura.

The Memory options are temporarily limited, should be fully available with a future BIOS update.

I have the same problem concerning temps. Which cooling solution do you use? I read at Toms that due to changes with the backplate there might be some issues. Seems like my AlphaCool Eisbär could be affected. So atm I'm not too sure if I should set up the system at all.

Edit: I found a spare AM3 backplate laying around, maybe I'll try that one.

drilled a bunch of holes in the chassis so I could mount my pump and reservoir... was kind of a bear getting some of the nuts on but I'm happy with it.

i need a pair of 3/8" rotary fittings though, my angles are all over the place

Ebay has 1700X plus Crosshair VI combos going for $1300. Also, 1800X and crosshair VI combos going for $950. What a bargain.

Ouch! People taking advantage of all the Ryzen excitement.

Just got back from Microcenter. Online inventory showed one open box Asus CVI for $203 so I got there right as the doors opened. Luckily the board was still there and I snagged it plus a 1700. As I was checking out I decided to check the box contents on a whim and found out the backplate was missing. The store rep gave me $20 off due to missing pieces so total the board cost me $153 with the $30 off combo CPU/mobo. Pretty stoked to get it put together.

LOL I was considering grabbing that open boxed crosshair, haha. We probably would have ran into each other. Question is, who would have held the door open for the other guy? First one in the door would have got that crosshair.

Bogg: "Good morning. Whatcha buying this morning?"
Elfear: "Oh nothing really, just a couple flash drives"
