Well I think were all pretty sure it won't be Snoozen and Zenon sounds too Intel like and Threadripper... Don't even get me started.

Duron was the name of their entry level Thunderbird core. Like sempron was to K8. So its probably not fitting in this case of AMD trying to reenter high end segment.

Some people are eating some crow now, huh!? lol

Well... let's see what the official benchmarks look like, first.

I'm also hoping that AMD does a good job delivering their new CPU's in volume, as they kinda messed up with RX-400 series GPU's when they first came out.

Zenon is actually pretty dope sounding. Definitely better than Ryzen. And is it such a big deal when Intel can't really sue for name similarity, and AMD has bit half the Intel's branding already.

Apparently the official way of saying Phenom is with the E syllable, which makes it sound real odd. It sounds much better for Zenon.

I think we pretty much know we are looking at 5960x to 6900k performance for half the price. Maybe even a third, if the 1700 turns out to be a solid overclocker. This really just puts the price gouging by intel into perspective imo!

There isn't much they can do about Global Foundries usual screw ups.

I heard that Zen was coming from a brand new facility from GF, but idk if that will make things better or not. I am less concerned about availability though, as I see CPUs are more of a long term investment for consumers.

Oh crap, I feel a new build coming on. Just when I thought my Phenom II x6 was my last CPU. Glad to see AMD is still in the processor game; I thought they'd thrown in the towel to Intel and were focusing their creative energies on graphics. Apparently, not.

LOL!

I just remember taking a #2 pencil and drawing a bridge between points on the CPU to change the multiplier, inexpensive fun times, and no "K" tax!

I remember doing that with my Athlon XP 1600+ (Palomino) that just unlocked the CPU so that you could make changes in the bios. I thought I was so slick. My early days with AnandTech.

Brings back Tomshardware videos also... Silver Lacquer and scotch tape and super glue...

Well Fab 8 in Malta NY isn't exactly new, it was AMD's new FAB before they sold their fab business to Global Foundries... But it is their only 300mm 14nm Fab, and it will be their 7nm Fab soon.

I find it really odd that the top of the line CPU has the highest base clock speed. Why wouldn't some 4C/8T chip have higher speeds? It should have extra TDP headroom and for some of the chips an option to fuse off the weakest or limiting core if more than 4 were good.
I also found that odd, but it's true for i7 vs the i5 as well. HT probably doesn't affect clock speeds to the same extent as extra cores, but the difference is still there, yet the i7 is the faster stock CPU.

3.8 Ghz 7600k
4.2 Ghz 7700k

I assume it's mostly marketing to make the more expensive CPUs look more appealing. Even if the more expensive CPUs are binned, I don't see why these lower end CPUs couldn't overclock at least as high as their bigger brothers. But again, most people don't overclock, so the more expensive CPUs seem better than they really are.

They don't want a Ryzen 5 to compete with a Ryzen 7. I think the quad core models will be the best overclockers though, as you said.

I'll probably end up buying one of the 4C/8T models in around August this year. Will be a nice upgrade from my Phenom II X6.

I am thinking about the 1500 myself. That extra $50 for 2 cores seems like a good deal imo.

The 1700 looks tempting, but I don't think I really need 8 cores for what I do, which is mostly gaming and some cad work. I suspect that it will be several years before 8 cores becomes a net positive in gaming, and by then I will want to upgrade again anyways.

Images says otherwise. So feel free to document something else.

Images also illustrate two different Tcase Max temps, if they would need a special cooler then Tcase Max would be the same for both at 72.4C.

Total profit is what counts.

If I have fixed operating costs of $100, and I have the choice of selling 20 widgets for $20 each at 40% gross margin or 40 widgets at $15 each at 35% gross margin, then which scenario is better?

You havent included the volume in the equation, what if you can sell double the widget volume at $15 than what you can sell at $20 ??
