AMD Sempron X2???

Just got email from geeks.com about an upcoming sale. They have a de-branded HP machine, with a "Sempron X2" CPU. I didn't know that AMD ever branded any of their X2 chips as Semprons. Has anyone ever seen one of these CPUs before?

I guess they do exist. Sempron X2s are 64-bit capable too.

I remember there was at some point a 3600 X2 cpu, with 2X256kb of L2 cache. But that wasn't named Sempron.
These aren't listed on AMD site though. Maybe it doesn't exists.

Should be a good competitor to the Celeron E1400. I wonder how they will stack up.

according to wiki, it came out the month between celeron e1200 and e1400 (mar '08).
specs seem identical: 2ghz, 800mhz fsb, 512kb l2 cache, 65w
celeron wins in like 3/4 of the benches but in gaming they seem to be dead even.

Well I guess it doesn't matter how fast they are in gaming, since both of these chips are not used for that.

Didn't think there'd be that much interest in these cpus. They aren't powerful enough for gaming and still too power-hungry for workstation at 65W.

itis been out probably for a year. i think digit-life did a review, it was oem only.

It seems the when got answered. I remember they came out to compete with the Celeron Dual Core line up, Newegg carried them for a short time. However due to price cuts and the elimination of the lower clocked X2 chips, the Sempron X2 was basically removed from the American market and sold almost exclusively in the Asian market because it was cheap. I'm honestly shocked to see them for sale again in America, haven't seen that in well over a year until just recently.

I thought the x2s are cheap enough, don't really need cheaper alternatives here. if i remember, it's just a cut down x2.

I think AMD also did the same thing with socket 939 Semprons that were OEM only.

Better off spending a few extra dollars and getting a x2 7750 BE which is a nice buy. Unlike a crappy semperon.

It's probably another AMD attempt to salvage chips that didn't work out properly since I can't see a logical reason to introduce a new line of processors. That link in the OP says these X2 semprons are 2x256kb cache at 65nm and they run at 1.6ghz. That seems totally pointless since a $40 X2 brisbane is the same 65nm except it has 2x512kb cache and runs at 2.1ghz. Even if sold for only $10, the semprons would still not be worth getting. Since you're already blowing a bunch of money on ram and a motherboard, you might as well just pay the $40 for a brisbane.
