the THG demo was an extreme case. I really don't think you have to worry about heatsinks falling off... unless you are silly enuf not to put a HS on the chip.

Not like this has ever been posted or disussed or anything.

If you like to run your CPU without a HSF, then yes, buy an Intel P4 that costs 4 times as much as a faster Athlon.

Have Fun.

micha33,

Welcome to the forums! You're right. The AMD chips run quite hot, but at $112 for a 1.4Ghz CPU that can hang with or beat a 1.7Ghz+ Intel chip, it's hard to beat the price/performance. You sound like you're kinda new to computers, so Intel may be a better way to go. Their stability is excellent, and they are easy to configure. AMD's are more for the tweakers and advanced users.

I am getting kind of annoyed at people who have seen that demo and are worried about getting the Thunderbird CPU. Yes, it will fry if your heatsink falls off. A human will get friend if he gets hit by lightning, but do you have lightning rods on your house? No, becaue the chances of both of these events occuring are extremely small. If you properly install you heatsink/fan combination then you should have no problems whatsoever. I do commend Intel on their superiour thermal control device, but that doesn't mean I will pay 4x the price to get equal performance. If your CPU did burn, you could just buy another one along with a new motherboard and it would still be cheaper than going the P4 route. Don't give up on AMD because their thermal management isn't sufficent for such a hot running processor. As long as you get a sufficent heatsink/fan combination and install it right you won't burn up the CPU.

thanks guys for not crucifying me on this one.

no I am not new to computers and actually I am a web and multimedia designer that need a solid work satiation. so I am worried about stability.

but you all are write, the cost performance ration makes AMD a better deal.

micha33: just make sure you do it right the first time, then leave it alone. Most people end up with cpu keychains because they are tweakers, and don't know when to leave well enough alone, and AMD cpu's are fragile. For the most part, the vast majority have no problems with T-birds.

And since that report was from THW, I'd take it with a grain of salt. They probably poured kerosine over it for effect.

If you're stupid enough to take off the heatsink while the system is running, you DESERVE to have your CPU fried...

Sugadady,

I am not stupid. this forum is for people that have questions and concerns.

If you think you are so smart, why are you even bother to answer ?

I'm pissed I have an AMD processor after seeing that.

I pay my little brother $2 an hour to stare at the inside of the case while I play games just in case somehow in some crazy freak accident the heatsink falls off of my processor. He's instructed to pull the plug immediately.

I'm not going to drive to and from work anymore because I heard if you hit a wall full speed you will die.

Where, did I say you were stupid? I wasn't speaking about you, and I was kidding, hence the ... Another example: The movie Glitter deserves an Oscar.

I know it sucks, but what I'm saying is what's the actual chance that your HS will fall off? And if you think it might fall off, just get a HS that screws to your motherboard. The people that fry CPUs do so because they don't install the HS properly, or don't put thermal paste, not because the HS suddenly falls off...

Hey, are you forgeting those people who have to ask, after trying to startup their system, "Whats a heatsink?"

think if this....if you live somewhere cold like I do, then your AMD rig can become your portable space heater

stability - and amd chip with a good motherboard and windows 2000 will give you tons of stability. i do alot of installing/uninstalling new software and messing around with different settings, and still have an extremely stable machine. amd 1GHz athlon, iwill kk266. my wifes machine, amd 750MHz athlon, abit kt7, doesn't get any tweaking and that is the most stable machine i have ever seen, again win2k. she could leave it on for a month without a reboot and not suffer any performance or stability issues.

But heatsinks need a fan to do their job. The result would be the same it would just be a few minutes more.

I heard if lightning strikes your house, a power surge could fry your whole computer, so I'm going to unplug it and never use it again after I'm done typing this.

No, before that you get a "Why do you have multiple cupholders on your computer mounted like that? I like the retractable part, but still, dont they block each other?"

Adul,

What are you talking about? The MP was tested in a Fujitsu-Siemens KT266 board that supports internal diode readings... Its one of a handful. Yeah, the Tyan's do, but there's no way to read them in windows.

In addition.... to those who think a heatsink won't fall off.... Having a working internal diode is great for a beginner who might have installed his heatsink incorrectly.... And mistakes do happen, no matter how many times you've done it... its a nice safeguard feature that AMD continues to ignore.

Ive no problems though at all with my AMD setup...still going for 3 days now without a hiccup
