amd socket am2 opteron

From what I've read, AMD won't offer an AM2 Opteron. The 939's were the last for normal desktop MBs.

Our Rev. F AMD Opterons are currently only available for Socket F and at the moment we do not provide any information about their availability for socket AM2. You should consider purchasing AMD Athlon X2 for Socket F since they support many advanced features such as Virtualization in the same way that rev. F Opterons do. From what I've read, the Opteron 12xx series is exclusively on AM2.

i have two documents that i printed from the amd web site that states this.
i was surprised at the response i rec'd from amd.

Why? They've never wanted "normal" people to be using their Opterons. They only want them in servers.

X2 for socket F??? Never heard of it...

These are for sale now at Newegg......although they seem to be holding a significant price increase over the comparable X2s.

$270 for basically an X2 4000+ is not worth it at all.

Actually the 4000+ chip is a 2.0Ghz.......the Opteron variant would be the 1212 Santa Ana and it is priced at $383 I dont know what is up with Neweggs pricing lately, but I am not liking it one bit. I keep finding myself sacrificing customer service for a 50% price reduction by shopping elsewhere.

Opteron 1xx and 12xx are designed for workstations.
You are right if you translate "normal" people as ones that use PC to surf the net and do stuff that a normal PIII can perform... then yes.

But in non-server functions; workstations are meant more for people that are a bit serious with their PC. IE the working professionals but some of the biggest stress a PC would do during non-server functions are to compile data and stressful math like graphics... so a "high-end gaming PC" and I do not mean pac-man will have advatages using Opertons... over the normal A64 and X2 speed for speed.
