I'm thinking about buying a 1.2 ghz athlon but a couple of my friends have some random problems like mouse hangups, video problems concerning 3d acceleration, and some vxd errors and such. Are these well know errors or are they isolated and uncommon?

Should I get an athlon or a P4??

I think alot of problems with AMD products, concern the bios settings on the motherboard, if they set correctly, I believe you can tell the diffence in stability, I have a t-bird oc'd to 900, and a p3 oc'd to 733, they both hang occasionally no matter what, probably related to the programs being run.

Athlon runs great for me. I used to run a slot-a 500@700 K7M with no problems. Now I run a Duron 700@950 with MSI K7T pro 2a. Both systems are perfectly stable, more stable than my old celeron300@450 Bh6 combo. Make sure you get an athlon approved power supply and memory. Also if you run win2k, use the memory patch if you have problems. A properly setup Athlon system will be cheaper and as stable or more than an Intel.

Also, Current intel systems do not offer an upgrade path for the future. Future P3's and P4's will have a new socket interface. I will not consider P4 untill they switch to 0.13 micron.

I have no complaints.

I'm running on an AMD 751 chipset based motherboard with a TBird Athlon and it runs great. You have to be careful with the setup, and make sure that your power supply can feed your Athlon well enough and you should be fine.

noriaki, u managed to get a slot t-bird eh?...

i couldn't find one...my cache is running at 1/2 however...

anyway, if properly configured, an athlon system will run as stable as a P4/P3...

keep in mind that stability, etc., is partially determined by the quality of components...don't expect to get stellar stability on a flaky mobo, w/ flaky memory, vid card, etc...goes for intel and amd.

amd is better performing htan the p4 and costs less..what else could u want? (and perhaps more upgradable, if palamino chips happen to work on 3-phase or non 3-phase mobos...)

I'm quite happy with my 1G T-Bird. I have also built four other 1G machines for my friends and parents and they are all happy also. I agree with geeman that most stability issues with Athalons can be attributed to incorrect BIOS settings. Every problem I have had was solved by correctly setting the BIOS..except for the Microsoft related ones.

What motherboards are your friends running with their Athlons? That could be the problem or the way they have it setup or the drivers they are using. Their problems are not caused by the Athlon itself.

I have an AMD classic 700, which I leave on for weeks at a time on 98SE The machine I built for my roomie, Duron on an Asus A7V had a BSOD. He remarked, "what is this!?" It was his first in six months on 98SE. Athlons are great for stability now!
