I have been using Intel for years and have no idea on AMD stuff.

1. I wonder should I get the OEM or Retail Box CPU ?

2. And if I goes for the retail CPU, how quiet is the AMD stock fan ?

3. What other 3rd party CPU fan alternatives I have ?

MUST be quiet, will not overclock.

Pls advice, thanks in advance

go for the oem boxed cpu. the retail fan is quite loud. if you want quiet, zalman and thermaltake are good alternatives. zalman are known for their quietness.

Uhh, definitely go zalman, I have mainly thermaltake stuff, and even though I love it, and it cools great, it is most definitely not silent. But from my experiences with zalman stuff, it's got great cooling, and is also dead silent.

Very true about the Thermaltake stuff being not silent, my last one pissed me off so much because of it's noise. But the OEM one is extremely quiet, my friend has one and it runs like a dream.... May not be the most efficient, but it's damn silent.

Since there is no heat sink included with the so-called OEM package for an AMD processor, you obviously meant that your friend has the AMD-packaged version referred to as "Retail", with a fan/heatsink labelled AMD. My own experience on various AMD's is relatively limited, but of those I have had close contact with, you seemingly can get either kind in a retail package -- some are quiet, some are more or less average (not necessarily "Loud" like the Thermaltake volcano, which was the noisiest heat sink device I've heard).

I have the retail versions of AMD's 2600 & 2800 heat sinks, and although they look much the same, the one intended for a 2600 is slightly louder for some reason, in all situations, including idling. I don't consider the noise from either one to be particularly loud compared to other computer-generated noises.

ok, this is probably an easy question...so here goes...

I have a 2700+ stock HSF. Can I just get another 60mm fan and replace it? Is there any sort of modification I have to consider before doing this? I'm considering on getting something a little more quiet with as good, or better cooling.

Any advice?

OEM unless you want the warranty/sticker/papers.

The retail fan is quiet enough during idle sessions but loud as heck under full load.

You shouldn't have too much trouble - get one that's the same thickness as your current fan though. And you'll want something with decent CFM or it might not cool things as well as the original fan.

For $20 though you can probably get something with a better heat sink, and a quieter, 80mm fan. 21db (rated, not sure if it's accurate, but I can't hear the fan over the hdd) and 4 degrees cooler cost me $26 canadian; I wish I'd done it 2 years ago when I bought the system.

Depends, my mobo has this thing called "Q-FAN" and it keeps the stock fan really quiet, but when I was gaming, you could hear it. I got an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2M after that, and its 100% silent. I can't even hear it when its on!

You can select the speed on the 2M, which is nice, I've got mine on the highest (because i'm overclocking right now) and I still can't hear it. The lowest is absolutely inaudable though.

What i have actually done is....

I have a CoolerMaster Solid Copper heatsink, with 2 "liquid cooling pipes" that probablly dont do anything. It came with a 7500rpm fan that drove me nuts. I used the stock AMD heatsink's fan, as it fit on fine (the coolermaster is about 65mm but very tall) I used to use the stock heatsink and got an idel of 50c. When i got the coolerMaster solid copper i went to around 37c-40c idle, not bad! with the coolermaster AND teh AMD stock fan i get no noise over my case fans What so ever, and, i sort of get the best of both worlds as i idle @ around 44c. its in between, but nice and quiet.

After a while, you get sick of your system sounding like an air conditioner. Its not worth it for a few extra degrees, as the processor can run perfectly fine to about 60c.

So ther are cheapy $10 - $15 HSF's like the Arctic Cooling that cool as good as the AMD retail HSF, but are quieter enough to justify the price and swap out? Or a cheap Cooler Master, PC Cooler, or Thermaltake? The Zalman's are pricey for the non-overclocker.

BTW, why not get the artic cooling 2 TC with the auto speed fan instead of the 2L/2M?

Slight OT, someone mentioned the Thermaltake Volcanos are loud. Are they all? On the ones with the adjustable fan like the Extreme Volcano 12, does it not cool well enough on the lower settings?

and very quiet to boot!

depends on the rest of your system. ifthe rest of your fans/psu are loud then relatively ... it will be quiet. without such ifno its hard to judge. its about medium in overall quietness

The Thermaltake Silent Boost isn't too cheap though, if someone is just looking for a cheap replacement for the stock HSF, and maybe doesn't care to OC a lot. I hear it doesn't cool as well as others around that price. Someone said the noise level spec isn't accurate either.?

0roo0roo, was your reply to the OP?

i "upgraded" from a spire Falconrock II to a thermaltake silent boost.
the TT was a somewhat better cooler [to the tune of 8c] but was noisier than the near silent FR2
if you aint overclocking get the FR2 - and it is darned cheap too

The Speeze Falconrock from Newegg and others is probably the best buy on the market, or the near identical Spire model of the same name.

Good advice. SVC doesn't seem to sell the Speeze/Spire anymore.

How about the Arctic Cooling 2 TC & 2L/2M, Cooler Master, or Thermaltake TR2-M1/2/4?

Newegg charges me tax so I tend to not order from them, which is why I go to SVC for HSF's and such. But not saying I wouldn't. The others I asked about where ones I saw cheap at SVC.

Just wondering, typically what percentage of noise is made by the heatsink fan combo? I want to lower my noise but I don't know where to start...

It really depends. Tell us everything in your system and then we can start.

Has anyone used any of the ones I listed 5 posts up?

And not as cheap as those, but a new interested HSF is the Cooler Master Dual Storm. What do you think?
And while OT and not Cooler Master, I also noticed the new Aerocool Centaurus 80mm case fans, that oddly look similar to the Dual Storm HSF. Anyone using any of these? I'm not sure just how new they are.
