I think all multi cpu systems have to have a cpu count that is a multiple of 2.

OuterSquare, nope you can have uneven numbers.
I wont say this is true for every architecture out there, but it is for Sun servers at least.

Wow that sure is impressive, but that isnt the first super computer built using amd Athlons. I remember reading a story about a beowulf cluster using something like 64 700mhz athlons. It put out 64 gigaflops at theoretical maximum. Also this computer wont get ranked amoung the top 200 super computers like they claimed because neither did the computer with the 64 athlons, because it was only 32 bits, and for the official rankings the computer has to be 64 bits. Still quite impressive though.

Where did you here that? It's not true. The #2 supercomputer (former #1) on earth, ASCII Red, is made up of almost 10,000 Intel Pentium Pro's which is a 32bit CPU. The 64 CPU Athlon system in Kentucky didn't make it because it wasn't fast enough. You can make the top 500 with 286's if you found a way to cluster a few million of them together.

Sunner, you're thinking of ASCII White, the current fastest computer on earth. It was designed by IBM and uses 8192 &quot;copper CPU's&quot; which are most likely some sort of PowerPC variant.

I just read in the paper today that Compaq is going to build a supercomputer for the Dept. of Energy and a reseach lab to do genome research. It will be eight times faster than the fastest computer right now.

Maybe Im blind, but I don't believe I have seen a chipset of any sort that supports SMP Athlons, so whats going on here? Don't tell me they are going to us a beowulf cluster of 132 individual Athlon boxes.
