Hello

Just wondering if anyone here in AnadTech actually using 8 bay storage enclosures with AMD system ?

See i got one and i run into so many problem but some other users who have intel where able to use same unit with no issue

also can you recommand me a good 8 bay or 10 bay storage enclosures based on your AMD System and brand name of unit and if it is connected via eSATA or USB 3.0

Thank in advance

While CPU strength may play a part in raw data transfer speeds from something like a massive external storage system, you're more likely to be held back by the drives that you're writing to than the strength of your CPU. Many people use Atom CPU's (super low power and compute power) to power their own homemade NAS systems. Haven't really heard of processors not being able to connect to external storage systems either, unless you have some screwy/broken USB ports or your file storage set-up on your machine is formatted differently than the external rig.

Also when you're asking for a large storage system like that you'll need to be a bit more specific about what you plan on doing with it. If you want something very simple and very plug and play, you'll likely just want to grab one of the large NAS that are pre-made from WD or Seagate, if you want more customization options and can put in the time the Drobos and Qnap systems are very popular for large storage systems. And if you want the ultimate level of customization you'll have to pretty much build a separate system and run some sort of OS purposed to the design of just being a file storage system, like Windows Home Server, etc. This is all assuming that you're just doing this for a huge amount of external storage for yourself, if this is a business environment that's a completely different animal and is going to be quite a bit more expensive.

Hi As i said my system is all AMD and massive external storage system that i got was connected via eSata port and it will randomly shutdown my pc or restart it as well as random long beeb out of no where and slow speed transfer like 45k

I change the card 3 times no luck so i retun the unit but i am thinking if AMD Motherboards and CPU will create an issue as intel guys are happy with same unit which i got and restuen it back to store

+ i am hoping other AMD users might give me name of system they have so mybe i can research my options

You're going to have to be more specific about what type of hardware you're running.

That being said, you mention changing out a card. Is this an eSATA expansion card we're talking?

Possibilities:
1. Defective eSATA port/random short or break in the line causing horrid transfer speed
2. Defective motherboard/damaged traces, can be anything from random sounds to random shut downs, random component malfunction etc.
3. Damaged hard drive, if something is mechanical malfunctioning then it could be having trouble doing any read/write operation.

Those are just possibilities but you'll need to be more specific about what hardware is running in your machine, what type of storage system you have it connected to, and what operating system/file storage format you and the storage system are running currently to be able to narrow down possible problems. Also I have 2 AMD based systems in my house, and neither has any issues moving files around in my collection of external drives.

Looking through your parts list nothing jumps out as a point of concern, without a more accurate description of behavior or just seeing it first-hand I can't really offer much more advice on what your problem might be.

Hi sorry , let me explain what happened in short summary
I got Sans Digital 8-Bay eSATA RAID 0/1/10/5/JBOD Tower Storage Enclosure w/ 6G PCIe Card TR8M+B (Black) with Rocket Raid Card 642L as JOBD. the reason i got it as i dont have space for 4U unit so i connected this new unit to my pc and i notice few issues

1- Long beeb non stop after the unit start
2- Speed transfer issue 48k
3- random shutdown of my pc while this unit is on

So after long hour of troubleshoot i got ventc 6gbps card eSATA and it did not work as it only see 4 drives out of 8 so then i got another card and same thing.

So then i got Rocket Raid 642L moedel speed issue was gone but random restart started and i run into so many other issue including crupited OS

Error : http://paste2.org/FZbFK0bM

So now i have feeling that Sans Digtial unit could be a good unit for intel users but not for users with AMD so i came to this fourm asking if anyone had used 8 bay system with AMD and if they run into any problems

That is my story and issue i run into , as i said I dont have Sans Digital unit i sent it back to newegg.com and got my money back so looking now

Thanks

It looks like you were using some third party tool "ASUS Disk Unlocker" to access a large volume. I would suspect that tool first.

When you only saw 4 drives did you have both cables plugged in?
You need 2 esata cables from the case to the computer to access all 8 drives
Each cable handles 4 drives

How many drives do you have inside your computer?

Thanks

Ok didn't know you sent it back

I use the 4 drive version of what you bought and never had an issue
Not sure if you want to try that or if you have room for 2 esata cards

I don't think your going to find a used or refurb pre-built NAS that holds that many drives anywhere near that price range

Have you looked into building your own?

Something like a Fractal Design Define R4 will hold 8 drives plus and can had not on sale for around 100
Than a Corsair 430 or 500 watt psu for around 50 still leaves you with 150 or so to find a board, cpu and memory

Am getting ready to move my server into that case from a Bitfenix Prodigy as I need more drive space but am going to add in a m1015 or Dell h200 card to support all of the drives instead of trying to run them off of the board

If you can stretch your budget buy another 80-100 you can find one of those cards on Ebay

Hello,

I had the same enclosure with an all AMD system. It worked great for me. I have since sold it, only because I lost a job. I did only use ONE esata card for the array though. Perhaps, the issue is with multiple SATA cards?
