Jesus Christ VOLUME WARNING! Everyone within 50 feet of my office was like OMG WTF IS THAT NOISE?! Stupid AMD going to get me fired with their loud thingy and then there's no chance of me buying their crap.
That said, the new cooler looks silent and well built. It looks like a great stock cooler and might not even have to be upgraded unless overclocking quite a bit. For a chip to ship with such a nice cooler would be a trip as good as LSD chip dip.

I'm confused. Is AMD suggesting that a larger, slower turning fan can produce less noise than a small screamer? Wow.

Innovation.

BTW- What kind of ghetto anechoic chamber has hardwood floors?

The first one was really noisy! Hard to know without any reference level though (we can just compare the two in the video). And I assume they were running them at max speed.

Anyway, is the news here that AMD will be providing a more capable and more silent stock CPU cooler? Unknown what CPU and socket it is intended for?

In fact it got released as a supposed to be cheap fan... cost 100 dollars and comes with a FX 6330 for free.

It seemed liked a solid stock cooler, maybe even hyper 212 evo levels. I am not sure if that's good news or not though. AMDs current philosophy has been to OC their top end products to be more competitive. The FuryX and the 9590 were released water cooled.

My guess is they are going to be doing that again. They might release these 'new' AM4 APUs with this cooler, and give them a mild OC to be more competitive.

It looks a little different in this picture, but I think you are right. I don't see this selling for $100 though.

No, it means Zen is even harder to cool than Bulldozer.

I dont care how hard to cool it is, as long as it beats skylake in IPC.

Description in youtube says
The new, premium AMD Wraith Cooler features a near-silent noise profile combined with attractive, illuminated style.
isn't premium just marketing talk for "will charge (a lot) extra" ?
I mean AMD also came out with a water cooler, didn't see that one become the standard stock cooler either.

Yep. I see it as an answer to Intels TS15A. Just like the water cooler was vs the TS13X.

Its something extra you can buy.

This would already be way overkill for Bristol Ridge...isn't Bristol Ridge only coming in Desktop flavors of 35 and 65Wattatatat?

Like...sure, if it doesn't raise the pricing of the product I'll GLADLY take it as that means I won't need an aftermarket solution. (Seems like this thing will be quiet and cool)

Zen on the other hand...might need it. 8-16 cores at 95w would definitely shrivvel up with those tiny APU screamers...I mean coolers.

Yep, it double pumps its TDP and dissipates 65W twice per second.

65W * 2Hz
65J/s * 2/s
130J/s^2

Maybe it was 65W for 2s? Does Zen only have a lifetime energy capacity of 130J?

My head hurts, need more coffee.

65 wats, because that's what you'll say when you see the benchmarks. http://memesvault.com/wp-content/uploads/Wat-Meme-Old-Lady-Face-01.jpg

Back on topic: cooler looks fairly nice, hope it gets included as stock with new high-end parts. Really hope that AMD finally ditch that old AM2 cooler mount though.

It would be nice, it seems like it could actually be useful for a higher TDP part at reasonable volumes. The stock cooler that came with my 8350 went straight into the misc heatsink box, it was unacceptably loud even for a file server tucked in my laundry room.

Why doesn't this person show the old cooler and new cooler side by side so we get a better understanding of the size difference? Frustrating to be so close to some good info, but yet so far away.

No just trolling, period. Just as you are. Quite obvious for everyone to see...
You're just mad because you're so easy to pick on. Stop being an easy target, and suddenly people won't bother you anymore.

When you start having views that don't incite mockery, suddenly you won't be everyone's favorite punching bag around here. You'll get there, in time, but so long as you are not figuring things out independently, and instead rely on people to correct you, to try to get you to see the light... you're going to have a hard time. Do us both a favor -- if you are in fact interested in hardware, as you seem to be, then go learn about it first hand. If you're not interested, quit wasting your and everyone else's time here and bug off.
____________

There's actually a lot of truth in what frozen said, though. You don't improve upon things arbitrarily, especially in business, but even elsewhere in the world. People that weren't trying to bust your balls picked up on that too.

So why did AMD invest money into a new cooler? Well, the answer is that they did it to improve their competitive standing with Intel. Intel can get away with simplistic, cheap coolers. AMD, however, has to fight with everything they've got. Thermal management is a huge part of the overall computer picture -- your power consumption, temperature, performance, acoustics, cost -- are dictated by it.

So let's do some fun calculus. The effect thermal performance on demand is logarithmic -- there is a point where having a better cooler will net you next to nothing in terms of creating a product that is more demanded. Performance is either linear with demand, or somewhat exponential (higher performance can create new markets). Cost follows a bell curve -- you get exponentially higher demand to a point, even with increasing costs (because those higher prices are buying you something desirable), but after a certain point, eventually too high of a cost kills your demand.

Something must have shifted, such that it is now suddenly worth it to develop a new cooler. AMD seems to think that the cost of developing a new cooler (higher fixed costs), in addition to the likely higher costs of manufacturing a new cooler (higher dynamic costs), are offset by the potential impact on demand -- they would sell more than enough units to make up for the higher costs, and be in a better position than if they had not done so.

We're still using the same type of cooler, and haven't had a paradigm shift in heat sink design like the Sandia cooler.

With performance, we have an unknown -- it is entirely possible to have a processor that runs hotter, and is more held back by heat than previous designs.

Here's what isn't unknown, though: cost. Costs have come down for raw materials a fair bit in the past few years. Copper is relatively cheap right now, as well as aluminum -- and I'd imagine plastic is as well, given the low cost of oil right now.

Given this, I'd argue that it has less to do with performance, next to nothing to do with advances in thermal management, and everything to do with how inexpensive it must be to make a better performing heatsink right now.

Is good to sell that heatsink for some bucks that can help get a better heatsink. Is useful for FM2 chips.
