A guy on the locked "Hot Deals" thread on this topic got an e-mail from AMD saying this year they would be checking Tax ID numbers to ensure that people were resellers. I've looked into it, though, and it looks pretty stinking easy, fast, and free to get a federal tax ID for a "sole proprietership" wihch I think would enable one to buy these bundles.

Desktop Bundle:
» AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Processor
» Microsoft Windows XP Professional OS
» MSI Motherboard K8NGM2-NBP NVidia C51 NBP chipset
» Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Sound card - SB 0460
If it was the FID, the fanboys would flood the Tech tours. The FID is one of the main HTPC mobos out there with onboard HDTV-out.

OP, before people start P&M'ing about the MSI board and the specs on it, might want to post this link in your message, it's a great guide on the MSI K8NGM2-FID mobo, it has some info on the -NBP version of the board, which is the board in the bundle. It will point out the differences in the board: MSI K8NGM2-FID and -NBP Thread

Last year you didn't have to prove anything. I just put admin and my company name, and that way fine. At the event they just checked my drivers licence to verify who I was before I handed over the bundle. It was fairly casual.

And how would this prove anything? ANYONE can get a Tax ID #...as you said, but it does cost a small fee the last time I looked.

Guess we will see...

No, it's free at the IRS website. There are other sites you can go through that charge a small fee, but it's pretty easy to do without going through them, and just going straight through the IRS. However, I believe that State Tax IDs, as opposed to federal, might have a small fee associated. How does it prove anything? It doesn't really prove anything, except to people who are letting it prove something to them. If AMD says, as they said in their e-mail, that they don't want non-resellers buying these packages, and as a precaution they are going to require a valid tax ID, well then, that's what it's good for, whether or not it proves anything to anyone else.

I'm not impressed with the mobo, and was hoping for an X2. I would most likely just continue to use my exisiting agp-based mobo. Then wait to do the PCIe switch later on.

Will just have to wait and see in regards to pricing and if there will in fact be any sort of reseller verification.

Getting a Federal EIN # is NOT the same as getting a State Reseller Tax ID #. Click here for what a reseller tax id certificate looks like (for FL at least). I'm pretty sure that's what they will be asking for. Getting a simple EIN # is not going to be enough, if AMD plays things (right).

It is an hours long event....the whole purpose is to highlight AMD and Microsoft's latest technology and why it is better than the competitions. It is a PR campaign. It is also about touching base with others involved in distributing products and or software.
You just put your company cards in several drawing boxes for prizes.

Just like any of the Microsoft events that are held all over the US...they have some interesting and some boring components. I think the purpose of having the bundles is to interest people in attending. I would imagine they may be stricter this year due to some possible misuse of the program last year ( I saw a family with all of their kids buying multiple bundles) and the fact that probably due to that misuse.... that they ran out of bundles so some that should have gotten bundles didn't. I guess they underestimated the amounts needed.

I think that the Tech Tour is a work in progress as at least one I attended was held outside of a college with mostly crazed kids jumping for Tshirts!....lol. They didn't have bundles but did have Chip drawings and a system build competition...the fastest builder won a complete system.
The next one indicated enthusiasts were welcome to attend and purchase a bundle. Now it appears according to some they may restrict bundle purchases in some way.
Time will tell.
In any event I think the events are great for PR. They create excitement and everyone I saw walking away with a bundle had a ear to ear grin. That kind of positive PR didn't really cost AMD or MS anything and the word of mouth it generated in the enthusiast community was incredible.
Keep em coming!

Some people in the later events found out when they gave out the bundles and arrived sometime close to it and left soon after....but you miss the drawings they timed to keep you there! heh heh heh.

If you got the email......most likely. If not, then highly highly unlikely.

In any case, I'm not as stoked this year. There's probably a little ching to be made on the desktop bundle. Not sure if it's enough for the hassle to get there. The server bundle seemed nice at first glance, but when you can get a complete server from Dell with SBS for $800, it marginalizes the value. Remember that the software is NFR.

I didn't get the e-mail invitation.

Can I just show up & enter & buy a bundle w/ my reseller permit?

For those who've never attended Microsoft events or are wondering, the term "solution providers" (mentioned in the first e-mail message I received) is generally fairly broad, and - in this case, at least - likely refers to many, many groups, and not just hardware distributors or resellers.

While I cannot speak for other cities, the varying levels of IT attendees at the events in the greater NYC area generally run gamut - from resellers, systems builders, and the like to developers, system administrators, Gold Certified Partners, ISVs, OEMs, and Business Solutions members. Personally, I rather enjoy interacting with the many different groups during the break sessions as it can be rather interesting to meet the different facets and functions of the IT world, including more personal interaction with Microsoft staff members. Of course, it can certainly foster partnerships that aid in a business sense as well.

Are there occasionally a few attendees who are obviously completely out of place, or present simply for a few tangible incentives? Of course. Referring to the above referenced area of the country however, I think it would be safe to say that group is a fairly insignificant minority (less than 5 - 10 %) of the whole.

Would be remiss not to point out that there may be a complete different experience in other parts of the country, though.

If it helps at all and can serve as any indication, both e-mail messages have been delivered to my Microsoft Partner e-mail address.

There are two power connectors on your Tomcat K8E S2865. The Tomcat K8E
S2865 requires that you have an EPS12V power supply that has a 24-pin and
an 8-pin power connector. The Tomcat K8E also supports ATX 2.x and ATX12V
power supplies (20-pin + 4-pin).
Please be aware that the 1st pin of 20-pin power
connector should be align with the 1st pin of 24-pin power connector on the
motherboard.
So the short answer is no it does not require a EPS12V PS.

Because your so lazy..

the opteron 165 can be had for $270 @ monarch after coupon

the motherboard ( TYAN Motherboard S2865G2NR )I found using price search engines to be around $190

Total, $460 for the hardware +possible tax (shipping is free @ these prices I believe). I say they throw in the software and offer this for 500$.

The Software looks to be around $810 with five client access licenses. We'll have to see how many come with the one in the deal. Anyways, for now, $1270 HW + SW

edit: subtracted 7$ due to new coupon code @ monarch
