AMD Thoroughbred/Barton questions

Hi folks.

I have an Asus KT-333 board, an Athlon XP 1800+ (T-bred B, I believe), and some PC21000 DDR (that's 266 mhz right?). I wanted to keep the mobo and RAM, but upgrade the processor.

Questions: the KT-333 can take the XP 2600+, right? I was wondering, can it also take the Barton? I can get a 2600+ (T-Bred) for $154 Cdn, but the 2500+ (Barton) for $136 Cdn. I found this price difference odd since I thought the Barton's were faster with their extra cache. Also, will I need faster DDR since the XP 2600+ runs at 333 mhz?

Suggestions? This is an upgrade done on a budget obviously to hold me over for a year or so until the Athlon 64's become more mainstream (read: affordable!) Thanks!

It probably can but check the asus site for any bios updates you may need to run either of the 2. The Barton would be a better deal but i would definately upgrade that ram to at least pc2700 so you can run sync with the cpu.

Unless ur ram can OC to 166 then don't bother with upgrading any highier than 2400XP unless u get atleast PC2700 ram. Your mother board probably supports the XP2500 but u'll need a bios update I would guess. If you can get the 2500XP go for that and screw the 2600.

What is the model number exactly ? the A7V333 is what I have, and it can go up to XP3200, and Barton.

Check newegg, you can get a 2600 barton for only maybe $15 more than the 2500 barton. That would leave you a little more head room for overclock, as these are overclocking just as well as the 2500

Why even upgrade the processor at all? 1800+ Tbred B is excellent overclocker. Just overclock your 1800+ to 2600+ or beyond. There you have your XP 2600+. Your cost: nothing. There is nothing like free upgrade.

Recently, Barton 2500+ are all around 123 bucks or so. Even less at some places.

www.ncix.com (use anitec to price match or use their flyer link)
www.anitec.ca

among others. Heck, even www.tigerdirect.ca has the 2500+ for 120 CAD I think.

Acutually NewEgg (which is much more reliable then the people above in my opinion) has the Barton 2500+ for $82.

True but it's a US company. He mentioned Canadian funds and sources which leads me to believe he's Canadian.

Unfortunately, NewEgg doesn't ship to Canada and AFAIK doesn't even take Canadian credit cards. If you're Canadian and want to buy from NewEgg you have to have an Amerifriend or a US shipping address and then have some way to pick it up/redirect it.

That's why all this continuing talk about NewEgg pisses me off because we can't - for all intents and purposes - take advantage of this etailer. :frown:
