Planet3DNow has some very interesting info on the small form factor versions of AMD's upcoming Thoroughbred processors.

According to Planet3DNow's chart, a 1.67GHz Thoroughbred will operate at 1.4V, significantly cooler than current Athlon XP Palominos. I'm not sure if this info is only for small form factor PC's (mATX only?), but it's interesting nonetheless.

I'll be happy if they add full thermal protection like Intel's CPUs have. CPUs in the year 2002 frying themselves when the cooling fails is simply unnacceptable.

The only real way you could fry your AMD processor is if you take off your CPU heatsink while your system is on (hehe).

If your fan fails, any T-bird or Palomino system will simply shut down, making a few beeping sounds before doing so. There's an option in the BIOS that enables this feature, and is the default option in almost all Socket A boards out there.

The only thing I would really like is a heatspreader for the Athlon. Still, I haven't had any problems so I really can't complain either way...

yup, I've overheated my XP numerous times on purpose, the board always checks it fine.

Those *could* just be laptop Thoroughbreds, in which case it isn't unusual for it to be under-normal Vcore.

its funny how every site posts a different Vcore for Thoroughbreds. This close to release, and no one has any official data on it?

I thought AMD did implement this with the XPs, aren't we just lacking in motherboard support?

What BFG10K is referring to is on-die shutdown capabilites. Most are in agreement that having to rely on motherboard makers to implement thermal shutdown is a pain in the arse. The Hammer should include this feature though (as well as an integrated heat spreader). I too would like to see the Vcore numbers.
Any ideas when the NDA's come off? June or earlier?

The thoroughbred being refered to does sound like a laptop processor, all the current athlon 4's run at 1.4v. The roadmap here shows mobile t'breds arriving at the same time. The current quickest athlon 4 runs at 1.4ghz and produces 25watts compare this to the palimino which runs at 1.8ghz and 1.7v you assume they are a similar chip just the athlon 4 is lower clocked/volted. this would probably hint at a 2000ghz 1.6v palimino. - edit 2000mhz doh!

Cool!

I know, I know - you meant 2GHz/2000MHz

*Drool* Could you imagion a 2000ghz CPU. *Drool some more* by the time we get there maybe we will have a FSB of 200 ghz. ohh that would be a sweat computer to use with the games of today.

got that right, my current athlon puts out enough heat to make it a little toasty, i gotta imagine a 2000GHz machine would be like a sauna.

I got my 1.1 tbird at 1.266ghz / 1.85vcore running nice and cool at 33c with a nice koolance case The hottest(and noisest) thing in the case at the moment is a 10k scsi hard drive.

Mingon, What motherboard are you using, and how are you measuring your CPU temps?

Regarding the Planet3dnow.De page... notice how the tbred "variable wattage" Chips only go up to 1.667ghz.

I am using a gigabyte ga7vtx and the temps are measured from a diode placed on the bottom of the heatsink ( linky )which is standard with the case. I could never get the chip to run stable at 1.266 with air cooling, but its perfect with the koolance. Unfortunately I can only go up with the multiplier as my usb cuts out above 138 fsb. Got a cheap 1500+ coming soon will try that, if only the t-bred would hurryup.

A Thermal probe attached via the Koolance "cutout" is not an accurate CPU measurement. First off, it must be cooler than the CPU, otherwise heat would flow from the copper-piece back to the CPU.

Secondly, it isn't close enough to ensure even a "fairly-good" reading. by fairly good, i mean this: Even the best side-core thermistor's show, at best, 80% of core temp rise over ambient.

On some boards like the Epox 8KHA+ you can set it to shutdown if it reaches a certain temp, mine is set at 56c,however the more cooling safe guards there are the better .

The mobo has a tempreture prob as well touching the underside of the chip, this show 45c but is not accurate as its a trapped pocket of air, I would guess real temps to be around 38c - 40 max, the majority of the heat in the case comes from hard drives and the video card. I want a ti 4200, and then get the gpu cooler attached as well Overall its a absolute top notch case.

Close? How close are we to actually 'buying' throroughbreds?

Fkloster,

Supposedly purchaseable in June, I believe? Which should mean that tbreds are shipping already, and stuff like Vcore should already be determined, and the better "sources" on the 'net and the people in the know should know the details about tbred.

Wondering why you said WE? There is no way I could picture you with a amd cpu.

Anyone else catch the humour? Good one.

* for those who don't get it... "sweat" is perspiration. We can only assume he meant "sweet".

Never, ever write a love letter saying, "I love you, my sweatie."

All that aside, cooler AMD CPUs is a good thing. They run fast but way too hot for my liking.
