AMD Thorton or Thoroughbred

Hey, how is everyone. I noticed while looking for a processor upgrade for my computer that there is/may be a difference in part numbers for Thorton and Thoroughbred core AMD processors. I am not sure if I am correct in my idea but the Thoroughbred cores seem to have the first four letters "AXDA", while the Thorton cores have "AXDC". Is this correct or am I just seeing a correlation that isn't actually there?

The Thortons have a possibility of being hacked to the full 512KB of L2 cache while Throughbreds are stuck at 256KB. Both fabs are very good right now and for OC'ing you could go with either one.

Yeah, i just ordered the thorton cored processor. Now, I have come across the article from overclockers.ru, but it only shows a picture of the bridged L2, but no real explanation of the process. Is there any other sites that may have information on unlocking the L2 on the thorton core chips.

There have been rumors going on at OC Forums that post week 39 thortons are also L2 bridge locked. If this is true, looks like AMD took all the bridge controls, including the L2 and clock multipliers to inside the organic packaging. (?)

I've tried modding two post week 39 chips (43/44 brown package) and have had no luck on those two. I have a wk 39 one/green package and that one modded fine. So in my case, looks like those rumors hold true.

Nothing that had been post here is totally correct, sorry I'm not looking for enemies! The real difference is the core size, which one is 20% bigger than Thoroughbred, that provide better heat transer, the cache is the same and there should be some invisible improving, but the most relevant thing is the core size.

You are correct the core is bigger, but there is a reason for this. It is because the new core is the barton core with disabled cache. I have read the white papers on the new AMD model 10 CPU's. They are using only one core, the barton, with different configurations of cache.

What do you mean by "brown package" vs "green package"? Or is there a way to find out which week the processor i get is from.

Sorry, you're right matrixops. But I haven't heard about a Thorton with 512 cache, am I right? Although it's possible that there ones with bigger L2.

As far as i have been able to tell, the thorton has 256k L2. According to some, it is possible to unlock the other 256k L2 cache. I read the article at xbitlabs.com. But, now it looks like AMD has removed this possibility in later week models as braxus mentioned above.
