AMD Throughbred vs. Thorton

Can anyone tell what is the difference between the AMD Throughbred and the Thorton. Also which one is the fastest AMD CPU other than the 64. I will like to upgrade my computer in order to do video editing.

are you going to only upgrade the CPU? because that board you have in your sig only takes slot athlons, which only went up to 1ghz.

if you are going to upgrade everything (ram, cpu, motherboard), you might as well go for the A64.

Yes, I an going to upgrade the cpu, motherboard (ASUS), ram, hard drive and anything else tha needs to be upgraded. I am considering the A64 but the high price of cpu and MB is holding me back. I have another computer with an ASUS A7N8X and an Athlon XP 2500+ (is a Barton). I still will like to know the difference of the Throughbred and Thorton.

there is no real difference. the thoroghbred starts with 256k of l2 cache, whereas the thorton is a barton (512k) with 256k disabled. i would think the thoroughbred would clock better, but im not sure. the fastest axp if you are overclocking is either the XP-M 2400+ 35W or the XP-M 2600+ 45W. If you are not ocing, the fastest is the 3200+. The 3200+ is clocked at 2.2, the mobiles will usually hit 2.5 on good air. also, the mobiles have unlocked multipliers, meaning they are very easy to overlock. if you end up buying a new mobo, i would reccomend the abit nf7-s v2 (not the nf7-s2). another answer to your question: barton is the fastest k7 per clock.

I also think that the Throughbred is faster than the Barton. I have a Barton 2500+ and is rated at 1.83 Ghz while the Throughbred 2400+ is rated at 1.93.

Any reason why do you recomend the Abit over the Asus. I have five computers (2 belongs to me and 3 to my kids) Asus and AMD are in all of them. I have never had any problem with then. Your recomendation will be welcome.

the extra 256kb cache (256kb -> 512kb) more than makes up for the speed in terms of performance.

if youre having a string of good luck w/ asus, don't screw up the streak

fastest amd cpu? probably the AthlonXP 3200+ (2.2ghz, 11 x 200)

you're better off getting an AthlonXP Mobile Barton, and easily o/cing to > 2.2ghz
