BTW, sorry about the mustard on the chip, mate...

If the analaysts are talking about it, there's a definite possibility that it will happen. There was talk forever by analysts that Dell was going to use AMD and it came to pass (after more than 1 year of talk) and there was talk that Dell would buy alienware and it came to pass also.

For intel to buy nvidia makes sense since intel is currently the #1 graphics vendor in terms of unit sales but their graphics sucks. Buying nVidia would allow them to get performance adequate for Vista. Also, Intel has been under the gun recently because it's profit margin has been declining. Buying nVidia could allow them to axe their graphics division which would save them money and also reduce the aggragate employment of engineers working on chipsets for nvidia and intel combined. Also, doing this would effectively reduce the number of chipset makers in the market allowing for more monopolistic pricing policies.

For AMD to buy ATI the analysis is less clear. AMD would finally have control to ensure the production of reliable chipsets. Maybe they could break into the lucrative chipset and MB business like intel did years ago.

IMHO it would be stupid for AMD. AMD is facing a huge competitive challenge with Intel's new Core 2 chips. They also need to pull in their late 65nm ramp and they already announced plans to refurb one of their 200 mm Dresden plants at a cost of $2.5B.

The also need to continue to focus on the server business where Intel is still weak but getting much stronger.

Aquiring ATI would just dilute their focus.

I think most people here see the semiconductor industry through the eyes of the enthusiast. The fact is that Conroe really won't effect AMD's bottom line much at all.
The majority of AMD's CPU profit comes from their Opteron line, which really won't be affected.
I admit that if AMD were unable to respond technologically for a couple of years (like Intel just went through), they would have some problems down the road...
But while AMD's marketshare may drop near the end of the year, their revenue share will keep increasing (especially with the Dell contract).

I can see how AMD&ATI would both benefit from a shared mobile/hand-held technology partnership. They both bring a lot to the table that they could work from, to create low-power, high-performing devices.

Looking to the future, the desktop sector will be less&less important, at least IMO. Enterprise, and the many areas of mobile technology should offer much better opportunities. The desktop market is fairly flat, and consumers may continue extending the time between purchases, or drift away all together, in favor of increasingly affordable and capable, notebooks and hand-held devices.

looking like more of a reality....I for one would be happy with AMD getting back into the chipset arena...this way they can as well as possibility of better onboard gpus, ppus, etc...

Not to mention possible implentation of ondie video controllers, etc...

Funny how the tweaktown article said Intel ppl knew of it and started to belive it...I guess this reaffirms my thoughts on "what Intel ppl know"!!! Hahahahaha

Hehe, as long as they still have what it takes to make good processors.

We will see how long they hold onto it this time...

ugg, i like AMD but not ATI. Sorry but ATI sucks IMO when it comes to drivers and software compatability. I dont really care about anyone elses experiences and how good they have been with ATI. Every single ATI card I have every owned sucked for the above reasons. I would rather own a slower nvidia card anytime than an ATI. If Intel purchased nvidia I would drop AMD and it's ATI crap in a heartbeat.

Gunnas, now that Intel has released a press statement saying that they are looking at the ATi/AMD merger/buyout/ w/e as a reality, what were those reasons that you had?
