ARTICLE BELOW:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SAN FRANCISCO -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is close to an agreement to buy ATI Technologies Inc., people familiar with the matter said.

Terms could not immediately be determined. ATI, an Markham, Ontario, company that is best-known for graphics chips, currently has a market value of about $4.2 billion.

Spokesmen for the two companies declined comment.

The long-rumored deal, if completed, would open a new front in AMD's struggle with Intel Corp., its nemesis in the market for microprocessors. Besides offering those chips, which act as the brains of personal computers, Intel offers companion products known as chip sets that carry out other important functions in PCs. That is an important advantage in fields such as laptop computers, where Intel is able to use the combination of products to bring benefits such as reduced power consumption.

ATI, though best known for add-in graphics cards it sells in competition with Nvidia Corp., is also a major seller of chip sets, particularly for laptops. Like Intel, ATI offers built-in graphics along with chip sets. Those capabilities could help AMD offer a complete "platform" of technologies for laptops and are the main reason AMD is interested in ATI, one person familiar with the situation said.

The transaction is considered controversial, however. That's partly because AMD has generally enjoyed benefits from being a neutral partner for both ATI and Nvidia, particularly in supplying components for the high-performance PCs favored by game enthusiasts.

Several news outlets carried reports of a potential deal Friday, including the Inquirer Web site, the Globe and Mail and Bloomberg. ATI shares rose 83 cents, or 5.3%, to $16.56 at 4 p.m. on Nasdaq. Shares of AMD, which reported financial results late Thursday, traded at $18.26--off $3.39, or 15.6%--on the New York Stock Exchange.

1) this is (was?) just a rumor

2) if this is in fact confirmed, you NEED to post a link.

No, AMD buying ATi in friendly manner. Most likely a stock swap since AMD doesn't really have the cash for the deal.

I don't understand why they would get into the graphic business. Intel can do the same with Nvidia if they want. This merger can distract AMD focus from its core business- making good processor.

Probably so when the processor market isn't the best for them (like now) they can ride it out a bit easier.

Seems like it might be bad for AMD to leave Nvidia out in the cold, but I'm going to assume that the multi billion dollar corporation knows economics better than me for now. I still gotta wonder where they're going with this though.

Do we live in interesting times or what?

wsj.com

He's not intelligent enough to figure that out. Just let him whine.

Bitch please, if you wanna post a link, make sure everybody can read it. If you can't do that, don't bother posting. It's a good thing WSJ isn't the only source.

Oh quit yourwhining already. There's nothing saying he has to post anything to appease you. A lot of people have WSJ links and the other people can easily type in a freaking three letter URL.

It may have also just been a mistake because he's a member. Let it go. You could have just as easily posted a "fixed" link and be done with it. But you took the time to type that instead. "don't bother posting"

There goes AMD relationship with Nvidia. I think AMD is in panic mode with Conroe coming out and Intel finally on the comeback after 5 years of crappy products

why buy the crappy graphics card manufacturer?

Maybe they'll overhaul ATI so they produce cards which don't suck?

I think this is a good move for AMD. They now have the ability to manufacture chipsets and provide complete platforms, a competitive advantage that Intel has had over them for a long, long time.

I doubt anyone's panicking. They weren't going to stay on top forever and they knew it. I'd be willing to bet that negotiations to buy ATI started long before we knew anything solid about conroe.

That's what Enron thought. And every major corporation that has gone out of business. Nobody makes a move that they thought was a bad one, but there have been plenty of bad moves.
