rumors say around 50% faster than a 6970, which puts it around 30% faster than a 580 on avg.$550 is too much I think, as I doubt it will outperform the 580 GTX.

30% faster than 6970 is similar to 6990?
Only in the world of FUD.

Fud must have gotten 6970 and 580 mixed up.
Im pretty sure it ll be a great deal faster than a 580, and "outperform" it.
Thats okay, you nvidia fans have a 680 to look forwards to, 6months lateron or so, that ll probably be slightly faster than this 7970.
35% more shaders, running 13% faster should => +53% increase in speed over caymanTahiti has 65sp (64 vector + 1 scaler) per CU, which gives 2080sp total (32CUs)
Cayman has 1536 sp
2080/1536 = 35,42% more ... clock if up to 1Ghz (in overdrive) is 13% more from Cayman(880Mhz), if this doesn't give average 50% over Cayman.....
6 monitors looks good. Hopefully it will be energy efficient.

I'm sticking to my guns - no new high end 28nm cards will be available for purchase until AFTER January.
You doubt? seriously? I can guarantee you that it will be faster then 580 and by a good margin.
Its just PrayForDeath saying its bound to be slower than a 580 is lol worthy.
According to Fudzilla, initial reports indicate that the 7970 appears to be about 30 percent faster than its Radeon HD 6970 predecessor.....
released in 3 days? So how long until the good ol' Anandtech review?
He may be right and really mean only 30% faster than the 6970. They are implementing a new architecture that focuses on compute. That can't come without some cost. Dedicated hardware is always faster (but less flexible) than programmable hardware.Fudzilla is just wrong, he probably ment to say its 30% faster than the nvidia 580.
Now it appears Fud thinks its around as fast as a 6990.In 3DMark 11
We managed to score some fresh info on the performance of AMD's upcoming Radeon HD 7970 card. Of course, as it was the case with previous performance figures we wrote about, these are only 3DMark 11 figures and are done with the first "usable" driver, but gives at least some insight about the performance that can only get better once the final driver shows up.
When compared to the HD 6970, the HD 7970 is around 50 percent faster in 3DMark 11 Extreme test. It scores around 2800 points while the HD 6970 can get up to around 1800 points. The HD 6990 scores around 3400 points in the same test, but according to our sources, HD 7970 is more than happy with a good OC that draws the card an inch away from the HD 6990. The previously reported 30ish percent was probably taken from 3DMark 11 Entry setting test where all the cards are closer in performance.
We were also told about the 3DMark 11 Performance setting performance that ends up on par with the HD 6990 but we aren't sure if these are with or without OC.
These numbers also mean that the HD 7970 ends up faster than the Nvidia GTX 590 in some cases. Of course, as always, take these numbers with a grain of salt as final driver could change a thing or two, but we guess that we'll know for sure on 22nd of December.

Im still standing by my own logic of (based on rumors of cards spec's):
35% more shaders + 13% higher clocks = +53% gains
+50% more memory bandwidth = +50% gains
= card thats over 50% faster than last gen card (the 6970) = ~35% faster than 580.
