So this time I got around to trying Skyrim v1.6. Note that the 1.4 patch brought significant performance increases, so keep that in mind when comparing this impression to the many articles that appeared when Skyrim was first released. I let the Skyrim launcher auto-detect my settings, which it set to "High", and then ran the game through the Nexus Mod Manager.

The only mods I had at the time were the official high-res texture pack, SkyUI, and the Categorized Favorites Menu (which required some tweaks to work at 1600x900, see this post and the one below it). The latter two mods require the Skyrim Script Extender.

I copied my save files from my desktop and loaded the latest one. It started out at Honingbrew Meadery just outside of Whiterun. Running from there to Whiterun's entrance netted me an average of about 20FPS, according to Fraps. It would dip into the high teens once in a while as it loaded new data from disk.

Inside Whiterun, I ran from the entrance to Dragonsreach (the Jarl's palace at the top), ranging from 20 to 24FPS or so. Inside Dragonsreach, I was seeing mainly high 20s and into the 30s. It really did vary quite a bit, but was mostly smooth. It did hit low 20s when looking directly into the fire pit in the middle of the hall. I then walked back outside and looked over Whiterun standing at the top of the stairs to Dragonsreach. Depending on where I looked, I'd get between 16-20FPS here. This spot seems to be known for being stressful, especially before the 1.4 patch.

After this, I fast-travelled to Markarth, which in my experience is the most demanding of the cities. I started at the entrance to Understone Keep at the back of Markarth and wandered around the city. For the most part, the frame rate stayed around 20FPS, but it would sometimes dip down to 15FPS when looking at the waterfall near the keep or when near the smelter outside Cidhna Mine (there's quite a bit of mist from the water there).

Finally, I travelled to Kolskeggr Mine east of Markarth to find someone to fight. A dragon showed up and fighting it seemed to keep the FPS around 18-20; however, some magical effects would slow it down to about 15-16FPS, such as when I would use one of the shouts or sometimes when the dragon would breathe frost. Inside the mine, it was a similar story. Most of the fights with Forsworn were pretty smooth, even with my summoned Dremora, but one of the Forsworn had some magic spell around him (some lightning thing, I think), which dropped the FPS to 16-17 momentarily.

For the most part, the game was very much playable even during the times the FPS would drop to mid-high teens. What little fighting I did was fine. The drops didn't last very long and the game was mainly able to stay in the low 20s. I don't think the number of people or enemies had too much of an effect on the frame rate; it was mainly shader effects, like certain spells (oddly enough, my fireball or Lightning Storm spells didn't seem to affect the frame rate at all), large waterfalls, and the mist in certain parts of Markarth.

I haven't gone back and messed with settings to try to get the game at a consistent 30FPS, though I don't think you'd have to sacrifice too much to do that, especially if you can deal with little dips every now and again.

EDIT: I set the AA to 2x and the AF to 4x. I think that's the sweet spot for me. Running around kept the FPS in the mid-20s to low 30s for the most part, even in fights and with magic. I did travel into the Dwemer ruins in Understone Keep (Markarth), which had several Falmer fighting a Dwemer Centurion Master (the big mechanical guys). That did drop down to the low 20s I think because one of the Centurion's attacks involved firing a large stream of steam at the Falmer. Once that enemy was taken care of, the FPS went back up to the mid-20s even with several more Falmer present. Kolskeggr Mine seemed to range between 30 and 40FPS with the Forsworn enemies and my summoned Dremora. The magic effects surrounding the Forsworn Briarheart didn't seem to have much impact on FPS this time around. Running around Markarth kept the frame rate between 23 and 30FPS or so, even when the waterfalls and mist. Similarly, looking down at Whiterun from the top of the stairs to Dragonsreach yielded a frame rate between 22 and 27FPS or thereabouts. Inside Dragonsreach, I was seeing over 30FPS almost the entire time and was even getting over 50 every so often!

In summary, I'd definitely have no problem playing this game on High settings with the AA at 2x and the AF at 4x. This is with the official HD texture pack loaded as well.

That's pretty good (especially for an IGP)...for the FPS junkies perhaps lowering shadows to medium or something would keep them out of the 20s.

Browsing is not at all a problem. It zips through the task easily. I need to run it through some youtube videos to check flash performance. But I fully expect it to run through it easily.

I'll add my observation to this thread over the next few days. The laptop is at home and I received it only yesterday evening and I havent been able to test much due to busy work schedule.

Do you have any more observations to add? I'm looking at buying this one and replacing the HDD with an SSD.

Just picked up an A10-4600m for 299.99 at best buy! The M6-1035 HP. (Of course this was because Best-buy messed up slickdeal for me..but they made it right

I am able to play Fallout new vegas on high settings...2x/4x and whizzing through the game...no hickups yet, Battery life was nearly 4 solid hours of playing.

Temperature didn't really raise too much easier suprisingly!

Best buy has an A10 for 599. The one I'm currently using..the only draw back is the stupid resolution....but honestly its been better than I was thinking it was going to be.

What I would like to see is the G2 option... an A10 with the ability to do dual graphics (w/ discrete... would be interesting).

did you get it yet and can tell us your impressions of it

Got it last week, typing on it right. I will provide a little deeper coverage.

The not so hot:
* Build quality seems decent, just average, a little on the chunky side.
* Feels more plasticky than the elitebook series.
* Up and down arrow buttons are too small, still getting used to them.
* No middle mouse button in touchpad
* The location of the card reader is hard to reach.

The mild
* Screen is very nice for a TN panel, but still poor viewing angles.
* No volume up or down buttons
* wireless switch and mute buttons are mechanical instead of the capacitive touch ones.
* Looks more humble than the Pavilion DV4-2040us it replaced, and it should be that way being a business oriented machine. Some might like it, some not.
* DisplayPort and eSATa connectors in the right side (I use them a lot) while uSB 3.0 is to the left (don't use them) Should have been the other way around as I prefer my most used connectors to the left but someone might disagree.
* Don't like the keyboard feel.

The lovely part
* I absolutely love the big slide tray to gain access to the parts. Parts replacement is a breeze.
* 1600 x 900 makes the screen actually usable for spreadsheets.
* DDR3 is 1600, and in running in proper dual channel.
* Battery life is awesome, I think it can go the promised 7 hrs (4:30 hrs my max run, still at 35%)
* Screen latch instead if magnets or spring to secure when it is closed.
* Express card, firewire, USB 3.0 and eSATA
* UEFI BIOS
* eSATa boot option. This one alone makes it worth the money for me.
* Windows installation was bare to the bones, drivers only. Not using it, but I could have used it if I wanted.
* Light and small enough to carry around
* Travelstar 7K750 500GB HDD (7200 rpm)
* Barely gets warm. On mild use, the fan doesn't even turn on, just once in a while.
* Ready for docking station.
* Fingerprint reader.
* The broadcomm 802.11 a/b/g/n 2x2 can catch very weak signals, and being dual band, I can pick the less congested frequency.

I moved my Sandisk extreme 120GB with win7 ultimate from the dv4-2040us, just some drivers re-installation, reactivate windows, and running like a champ. As you can imagine, the 8GB with the quad core and the toggle NAND SSD make the machine fly.

All in all, very pleased with the computer. Yes, backlighted keyboard would have been nice, my eSATa on the left would have been wonderful, screen could have been IPS or 1080p IPS, but those are in all honesty, minor gripes. The price tag is not cheap, but I think it is well worth.

Alex

Edit: Forgot the DisplayPort connection (positive) Have a monitor that is 2560 x 1440? This is your connection to run the monitor at full resolution. If your monitor doesn't have DP, a $10 adapter will help you use it with a HDMI or DVI monitor.

I was initially going to get a decent laptop gaming rig (already have an outdated one that I bought 4 years ago) but after much thought I have concluded that I am now more of a casual gamer (play about 30mins-1hr a week at most).

I am thinking of biting and getting that m6 hp laptop with the A10 from best buy. I already went to best buy last night to check it out and it's pretty nice... I guess the only turnoff for me is the low resolution screen (compared to the 1080p ips matte screen that the zenbook ux31a has WOW). So... for $579... should I bite? After tax in CA it'll be around 640 OTD... not bad! I think for me the less I spend, the better.

I have SF4:AE, Counterstrike Global Offense, L4D2, Crisis 2, and a bunch of other games... you think this system will be good enough to get about 30-40 fps on medium @native resolution?

Welp, just bought it... pretty awesome laptop to be honest. Even with the little gimmick of the Beats audio.. and the tiny subwoofer it has on the bottom panel... still cool. Just tried trine and it works well. Gonna install some other games later and see how that goes!

Anybody know if you can overclock the trinity cpu/igp? So far the consensus is no.

Part of the problem with overclocking the APUs is they share resources between the CPU/GPU and if you overclock one or the other to much it will take power away from the other so it wont run as fast or turbo as high. If I recall, overclocking the bus a little and getting faster RAM was the best way to OC without messing up the balance.

I'm certainly no expert though, just sharing what I've read so far.

Hm... anybody know the return policy for best buy on laptops? I may return it and get the acer m5-ultra with GT 640M LE instead for $779 on amazon.com. HMMMMM
I paid $632 OTD for this trinity and it's alright... but I do want something a little more powerful but not heavy.
