Is this hardware going to die off? I think like only one game supported it, does anyone have any insight if AMD will continue or augment this, or are they heading to toward VR with it?

I heard they're working on a method to use GPU compute for audio processing. They're pretty much abandoning the dedicated audio DSP, as far as I know.

I am very surprised this has not been pursued more considering the awesome progress Aureal did in this field back in the day and with much less potent hardware to compute audio.

The problem had been that current GPUs don't have priority handling and latency guarantees. I've seen the patent in question over at b3d and that could very well fix that at the expense of one or more SIMD vector units that are taken aside for audio calculations.

The TrueAudio with fixed function DSP won't get anywhere on PC. AMD just throw it out from Polaris, because they have a better solution from now. Polaris don't need a DSP, because instruction prefetch will help a lot for them. Sony also moved to this approach, they just integrated the TrueAudio DSP for the PS4 Pro only for compatibility reasons. But for the future instruction prefetch and CU reservation is a much better path. The TrueAudio Next API is the real deal now, because it can run on the CPU, on any GPU with OpenCL 1.1 support, and on Polaris with special functions, that will boost the performance a lot compared to the other hardwares. But the main advantage is the open API, so even if the user don't have a Polaris GPU the TrueAudio Next will just guarantee the code execution. A developer just need to create a sound quality option in the game, so everybody can adjust this for the actual configuration. This is the best solution for the whole market.
