AMD Turbo Core vs. Overclocking

First time builder here, working with a FX6300. I'm trying to better understand the turbo core functionality, and figuring out where the "break even" point is between just letting the chip run stock, vs. disabling turbo core and overclocking.

I've done some googling, but most of the Turbo Core articles seem to be around the Phenoms. Based on those, it seems like Turbo will kick in when up to 1/2 of the cores are active. In my case, I could have 3 cores running in turbo @ 4.1 before it starts throttling. Is that correct? Or am I guilty of oversimplifying.

Where I'm going with this is everyday computer type use, with lightly threaded apps. My computer currently idles at a multiplier of 7x, medium work will kick that up to a 17.5x (3.5 ghz stock speed) with some cores popping up to 19x. Every now and then I see one hitting max turbo @ 20.5x. It seems to me that to get any tangible benefit from OC'ing in these lightly threaded apps, I'd at least need to exceed the 4.1 ghz Turbo for OC. That's simply because the processor would likely be in turbo mode anyway on lightly threaded apps.

I understand this picture totally changes when my wife fires up Photoshop or I try to do home movie editing. At that point, I need power and the OC should help since Turbo probably wouldn't be running anyway in a stock setting scenario.

At this point, I have the chip overclocked to 4.2 with a 21 multiplier. I picked this point because it seems like this gives me better performance than stock in all scenarios since it is faster than Turbo. I did take it as far as 4.5, but my limited cooling (Evo + one case fan) couldn't keep up with the heat during Prime.

But, since I don't think I grasp all the details of Turbo Core I thought I'd throw the question out for everyone. I see two options:

1) Set OC to turbo levels @ 20.5x - I'm not sure though if I would see any speed benefits for anything other than multi-threaded apps compared to stock? But that statement is based on my shaky understanding of Turbo core, and assuming it would be running anyway on light threaded apps.

2) Running at stock, letting Turbo kick in where needed, and setting up an OC profile to enable in AMD Overdrive when I need max performance. This approach would probably stress the components less, generate less heat over time, etc.

Thoughts? Where am I wrong in my thinking? Educate me!

(I understand the third option is to OC for the sake of seeing how far I can push my system, but I'm not there yet.)

If you let the CPU clock down when not in use then you should just set it the highest stable frequency that it will run on your preferred voltage (without Turbo core).

Stock voltage OC's are the only ones that make sense to me.
