AMD/VIA machine consistently hangs - back to Intel?

After following the success of AMD here at AnandTech for a number of months I decided to make my new machine an AMD. Unfortunately this machine consistently hangs when trying to capture video or when converting an AVI to MPEG. My configuration is as follows:

MSI KT7 Pro (6330) ver 1 motherboard
128MB PC133 RAM
Thunderbird 800
20GB IBM Deskstar Ultra66 HD
Asus 7100 GeForce2 MX 32MB AGP video
Hauppauge WinTV PCI capture card
SoundBlaster Live!
300Watt power supply
Windows2000 Professional

I have tried upping the core voltage to 1.75 but that didn't help. I have the latest VIA 4-in-1 installed and the latest drivers from Asus and Hauppauge as well as the latest MB BIOS.

I upgraded to DirectX and re-installed everything again as a clean install all to no avail. I am pretty much fed up with this system since moving all the components to my old Pentium II 333 results in captures and conversions with no problems.

Can anyone here at AnandTech think of anything that might help me out?

Thanks,
Mike

I have the same board with Win98 but with no problems, anyway have you tweaked your Bios? I have fastwrites disabled,AGP 4X enabled & all Video shadowing disabled, btw Most of the Members here use the Nvidia reference Drivers(I use 6.31,you can try 6.47 beta drivers they are supposed to be pretty good),the latest Bios version for MSI is 1.8 this has a new memory timing detection in Bios.Do 3D games run OK?

Btw check your IRQ`s see if anything hardware wise is conflicting with another hardware device.

does it hang randomly or when you are doing something?

can you test the ram or power supply?

pull everything non-essentail out of the system (tv tuner, sound card etc and see if it still hangs, that will help isolate where the problem maybe.
sorry i can't be more specific.

I've ha d problems with my K7V that sound like the problems you are having
Solutions

1: Make sure you use the Detinator 2 drivers detinator3 crashed my machine
2: Turn Fast Writes in the Bios
3: Disable AGP 4 and use AGP 2
4: Make sure that you fan is on your CPU correctly with theraml contact
5: Try underclocking your CPU to 600

I'm having a similar problem. Just bought an FIC AZ11 and a 650 Duron, running with an AIW Radeon. Certain video features will cause lockups, and any net games played will drop my net connection, and once i exit the game (HL, CS,UT) i will have no net access and have to reboot then the conneciton works fine.

Running an FICAZ11
650 Duron
AIW Radeon
onboard sound for now
Win98 SE
Via 4 in 1 425a

I'm having a similar problem, but with cd burning from the HD. When I use Easy CD Creator to burn .wav files from my HD, Easy CD Creator stops responding after about 3-4 minutes. Sandra says AGP bus, PCI bus, ISA/DMA bus speeds are all too high. I've put everything in the BIOS to their defaults, to no avail. I think it has something to do with the ISA/DMA bus speed being to high??

What I have:
MSI K7T Pro (6330)
on board sound
cheap PCI modem
EPO 50x speed cd-rom
Iomega 12x4x32 burner
btc 8x DVD-rom (having problem before putting this in)
DiamondMax 20gig HD 7200rpm
3dfx voodoo3 1000 vid card

I'll try what pisspoor suggests. I hope it solves the prob. BTW, Sandra also reports very high temps, but BIOS says totally differently. Which should I trust?

Thanks for your help.

Hey Mikster,

I think 2000 might be your problem...I run a dual boot system (98 and 2000) and encoding video in 2000 just isnt' happening. 2000 actually locks up and I have to reboot. Yeah, 2000 locks up!
98 is fine for encoding so that's what I use.

Oh, just to let you know, I have the Asus A7V MB

Try disabling AGP 4x. I had all kinds of problems with lockups, etc. when I had it enabled with my video card (see sig), but as it turns out ATI and the KT133 chipset do not mix well (not sure how the Radeon acts with AGP4x. Anyone tried that combo with it enabled??)

Just my .02

I have to agree with Evilboy about the Win2000 thing. Whenever I tried to run any games under Win2000 it would lock up pretty quickly. There is a VIA AGP update on Microsoft's site here, but it didn't work for me. I wound up going back to 98 and haven't had any problems since.

qui and stockjock,

I do have the 4 in 1 drivers installed. Anyway, I disabled everything I could in the BIOS and it's working properly now. I don't notice any slowdown since doing so either, but I do wish I knew exactly what was causing the problem. I'll just have to do it systematically once I find some spare time.

BTW, Sandra still reports AGP bus, PCI bus, ISA/DMA bus speeds are too high. Oh well.

Get rid of the 6.xx series drivers, they still don't work perfectly on KT133 motherboards. I'm willing to bet that they're the sole reason of your problems, as I have nearly identical CPU/mobo/video configuration as you.
