I guess if you dont know that AS will void the warranty and you dont clean the CPU well.

I've never had a CPU to return that was still under warranty so ....

like the article says, ANY grease will void the warranty, save the Shin Etsu stuff in the article.

this isn't new news, it has been known for quite some time. No real shock either, AMD is covering their own rear-ends with this.

I believe it is also teh case that if you buy a retail CPU, if you don't use the retail heatsink/pad, the warranty is voided... Will read the retail packaging legalese in a little while and update my post.

Mike

Update from "Warranty" statement with AMD retail processors (in this case, a Thoroughbred 2100+ Retail):

This Limited Warranty Shall be null and void if the AMD microprocessor which is the subject of this LImited Warranty is used with any heatsink/fan other than the one provided herewith

So the same case, if you buy a retail chip, using any other heatsink than the retail heatsink technically voids the warranty as well. Again, AMD covering their own butt's. No real shock here.

hmmm
so i guess before you do a rma on a retail chip, stick it in the board and slap on the stock heatsink to make it look like you used it lol

Jeff7181,

There was a website that posted an e-mail from AMD many months ago on the same subject. It isnt' speculation.

Plus, if you check the original link, htere is a reply from AMD:

For permanent installation AMD only recommends using phase change material with the heatsink/fan. No thermal grease is recommended for anything other than temporary evaluation purposes. And the only thermal grease recommended for that is Shin Etsu G 749. Artic Silver is made up of a matrix with conductive particles. There is the possibility of creating electrical shorts on the package. Any failed processor used w/ Artic Silver or any other thermal grease other than Shin Estu G 749 would be subject to warranty voiding. The concerns with other thermal greases are due to thermal pumpout causing overheating with on off cycling of the PC over time. The above information assumes you are referring to use with Athlon. For Opteron Shin Etsu G 749 also is the only thermal grease recommended for permanent installation. Again the concern is due to pumpout with thermal cycling.

So that's AMD's response to XtremeTek on the grease issue. Again, its AMD simply trying to cover their own end against people who don't apply grease properly, etc. And it is no different than with the voiding of the retail warranty by not using the supplied retail heatsink/fan.

AS3 works great, that's all that matters to me. BTW overclocking voids your warranty too, so why wouldn't you be using AS3 if you're overclocking?

One factor that may not be fully understood by everybody is that AMD only provides a warranty on their boxed processors.

As they say on their site...
AMD's Limited Processor Warranty does not cover non-boxed products purchased from resellers.

AMD only provides a warranty on its line of boxed processors.

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_867,00.html
There is no AMD warranty on OEM "tray" processors so there is no AMD warranty to void by using thermal grease.

And on the boxed processors, you MUST use the supplied heatsink and thermal pad to maintain the warranty...

This Limited Warranty shall be null and void if the AMD microprocessor which is the subject of this Limited Warranty is used with any heatsink/fan other than the one provided herewith.

I hope this helps,

never once cared about a CPU warranty... for $50 for something like an XP1700+, if you burn the damn CPU, it's your fault... otherwise, i've never seen a CPU go bad.. that's the one thing I worry least about... (CPU) I've never seen a CPU fail unless the fan has failed, or the PSU has blown up and taken everything with it... otherwise, VERY(!!) reliable.

From the article:

Most likely if your chip dies it will be for reasons that would void your warranty anyway.

Why use Arctic Silver if you're not overclocking? And we all know that overclocking is hazardous to warranties.

I've only been buying the non-boxed chips lately.
And I only use AS3.
The suppliers I use offer 30 warranty on CPU.
I've never RMA'd a CPU.

If you can tell within 30 days that the CPU isnt performing at specifications.
Send it back to the SUPPLIER not AMD.

This news was new to me,,,, sorry for confusing anyone also ...

Are they REALLY going to take the time to do that?

Just use alcohol to get rid of the stuff and then attach a dirtied'up retail HSF heh.

Well if the cpu is dead & you're going to RMA it why not just pop the cpu in a dishwasher.

It should come out really clean.
