Amd has 384kb cache on there Xp line of processors (128kb L1, 256kb L2). As for the pentium 4 it has exactly 532kb total cache (20kb L1 512kb L2) so there is a advantage the pentium 4 has with cache size. And the 20kbs of L1 trace cache is very fast and doesnt need to be massive compaired to the L2. With the upcoming prescott with 1042kb cache (20kb L1, 1024kb L2) it will be even more of a performance boost because the cache is a quick way to store small memory that runs at the cpu speed instead of storing it in the system memory, and then fetching it. So cache is a big deal in adding performance, sh!t look at the wonderful 1GHz Itanium 2 with 3MB (3072kb) L3 ondie cache. Most benefits ive seen is in photoshop or other multimedia programs where cache and system memory help a bunch, hope that helps man

i have been runnin a 1.8 p4 and soyo p4s dragon motherboard. costs about 250$ today

i just put a xp 1800+ and a refurbed k7s5a and they both have geforce 4 cards.

on default run she almost beat my p4. my p4 was overclocked to 2 gigs. and video was overclocked.

her computer wasnt overclocked 1 bit.

at my computer running 1.8 gig her computer outscores mine at xp1000+ default speeds. and hers cost 100$ compared to my 250$

yes yes yes i know my stuff can overclock nicely...but i dont need it to.

if i had a choice i would trade my p4 for AMD anyday.

Just to mention, the P4 has 512KB of cache. It's inclusive caching system means that data in the L1 is written on the L2 as well. It doesn't add up. And it has 8 KB of L1 d-cache and a 12k-entry trace cache which we have no idea how it corresponds with data size so simply adding the two up is insufficient as well.

It seems like prices for Intel processors are going up a few dollars.

Everything else being equal, I would go with AMD because of the possibility of compatibility with the future Barton core. You don't get that with the Intel camp. Not sure if the memory will still be good then, but at least the mobo is rumored to still be useful for Barton. Course, only time will tell if this will come to be.
