AMD Price Cuts Strike Athlon 64 X2, Turion Family

AMD trimmed the price of its fastest Athlon 64 X2 4800+ by just under 20 percent, as the price of the chip fell from $803 to $643. AMD discounted the 4600+ and 4400+ X2 chips by 14 and 8 percent, to $556 and $467, respectively. Similarly modest cuts arrived with the revised prices of the 4200+ and 3800+, discounted 11 percent and 8 percent to $362 and $301, respectively.

You quoting a year old article there?

Sorry, my bad. I saw this article at SFFTech.com, and did a google news search and just copied and pasted that article above:

AMD Cutting Prices
If you?re looking to build an AMD powered system, you might want to hold out a short while as we are very likely to see revised CPU prices from the Sunnyvale based chip maker. ?AMD Monday will slash prices by as much as 30 percent on its Athlon 64 X2 dual-core microprocessor series, according to a system builder with a long-standing business relationship with the chip giant.
The system builder, who preferred to remain anonymous, said manufacturer prices for the top-of-the-line Athlon 64 X2 6000+ would drop from $241-per-unit to about $170. The price of an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ would be cut from about $90 to $69, he said?
Less than $200 for a 6000+ is just great deal any way you look at it. That chip may not be quite as fast at media editing as the new Quad-Core CPUs that Intel is touting, but it?s anything but slow.

I own the Opty 165 myself. Bigger L2 cache in the Opty, but they really means little performance difference. I have set up 2 of the Egg 3800+ X2 for others. Both 3800+ X2s are very strong overclockers. One will do 2.8GHz on stock volts, the other 2.6GHz on stock volts. Not bad.

Not a bad deal. Add in a PCIe Video Card, and us AGP-using fogies can upgrade on the cheap, keeping our DDR RAM.

No doubt, go for the dual core.....
Allrighty, as long as it outperforms my 3000+ in WoW I'm good to go.

Well, I'm not guaranteeing any increase in game performance here....

What do you have the 3000+ running at?
I think most game performance is related to quality of the video card after a certain point of processor speed.

WoW seems to be more CPU heavy than some games (HL2 runs almost fine at almost max settings at 1024x768). It's the middle of summer, and roasting here, so I put it back down to 2.0. When I have it at 2.3 (Highest it will go with 1T, dual channel, and value ram =\) the game seems to gain about ~10-15 fps.
As long as the performance is the same, I'd rather get it for $70, sell the 3000+ for $25, and have a nice cheap $45 upgrade. And with it I could watch movies / listen to music with no fps loss. I could grab it and another GB of ram to make this system last until next fall when I build again.

EDIT: It has been forever since I kept up with hardware and such, but doesn't gaming at a low res make you more cpu limited?
