I wonder how many watts a downclocked 45 nm Intel would take to do the same work as this chip?

That's interesting didn't even think of that! Someone should do a test ;P

Well, if yours is on 24/7, then the 4850e seems like the best bet since 24/7 for 1yr at 12w difference is about 100kwh, which will be almost $20 depending on your energy costs.
One thing I will mention as a Brisbane owner (4000+) is that they don't require stock voltage so you can lower the power draw by lowering the voltage. Mine works on 1V (stock is 1.25V) at stock speed. So according to this power calculator link it only draws 42w at load.
However, the 4850e can probably be undervolted too, though it would take some googling to figure out to what extent.

If you're talking about the US, then the avergage cost for energy is $0.103 (10.3 cents)/kwh...so about $10/year

I just put together a sweet little HTPC this weekend using the AMD X2 4850e and a Gigabyte 780G motherboard. I am blown away at how responsive the system is and have been using it in place of my main desktop. I'm still waiting for my TV card (an ATI 650 card) to finish assembly. Vista Premium installed without a hitch and has been playing nice for the last 24 hours. I'm using a 2wire USB wireless adapter for broadband access and the system responds as fast as my desktop which is connected to the gateway with an ethernet cable. Now I'm wanting to update my desktop using the Phenom 9150e as soon as I catch up from putting this system together. Anyway, unless you're a hard core gamer, I don't think you'll be disappointed with this little gem!

System:
GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon X2 4850e CPU
ASUS EAH3450/HTP/512M Radeon HD 3450 512MB PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card
ATI TV Wonder 650 PCIE TV Tuner Card
Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 Memory
Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB Hard Drive (OS drive)
Western Digital Green Power 500GB Hard Drive (Saved Media)
Pioneer DVR-115DBK DVD R/RW Recorder
COOLER MASTER Elite 340 RC-340C-KKN1-GP Micro-ATX Mini-Tower Case
Antec earthwatts EA380 380W ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply
Microsoft Vista Home Premium (32-bit)

Just ordered one with this setup:

Rig

Can't wait to put it through its paces. I'm going to install a spare Vista home premium license and eventually throw in a 4gb kit to bring to 6GB ram in the future. I have a spare 7200.10 320GB sata drive kicking around at home that I'll use. I don't plan on having any drives, just a temporary DVD drive for the OS install. After that, I got me a slim, lean, cool AMD machine for $259. That's a great price for a 45w build. The 780G looks quite exciting and for the first time since I built my Opteron rigs, I'm pumped at an AMD offering. This is a niche that AMD really owns right now and I'm happy to throw some money at it. Not a lot of money either!

I have a thread about the build here.

I really can't seem to find anything from Intel that matches.

I paid $79.99 with free shipping.

It's arriving today! I got the lovely "out for delivery" notification. The only problem --- I'm jammed all weekend and won't be able to build/fire up the machine till next Wednesday at the earliest. Not much of a problem since the case I bought is coming from TN and won't be here till Monday. Sigh.

Well I managed to get the box up and running today. Very nice little system. This chip with C'N'Q enabled is using .99 vcore and temps are at about 20c with the fan not even moving in a very heavily air conditioned office. The thermostat read 72F but the way it blows on my side of the office it's more like 65. Insanely low temps on the stock cooler with the fan moving at like 300 rpm with the smartfan management cranked.

Vista is fast, responsive and this chip has more than enough strength for day to day usage. It rips through IE, outlook, normal apps with ease and the experience is no less "snappy" than on my OC'd E2180. I haven't busted out a kill-a-watt meter or anything (need to buy one first) but I can imagine this little chip isn't using much juice. Very pleasant system to use and I'm totally psyched about it. AMD has a real winner here.
