ok, remotely connected to box, installed PS 7, and ran the test...

Dell GX620:

Pentium D - 820 (2.8 GHz) w/ 512mb ram

63 seconds

(not too bad compared to 3.6 ghz box i tested earlier)

You could shave off another 10 seconds or so if you used CS2 as well. PRobably a few more seconds if you had more than 512MB too. I would guess it would be in line with some of the slower G5 dual processors, which is pretty respectable. Especially for a $280 CPU.

I tested with my old Athlon 1.2Ghz machine from four years ago with Photoshop CS and it gave me 4 min 22 sec.

Well That gives me more reasons to convince my wife i need a new computer!

AMD x2 3800+ @2.5Ghz
2Gig Corsair ValueRam 4x512mb
DFI NF4 Ultra-D
WD Raptor 74GB OS/Program
2x120GB Maxtor 7200RPM HDD software raid for data

~33 sec using Stop Watch
38~50 sec using CS2 timer

I am having hard time believing CS2 timer is accurate. I ran the test at least 5 times, and everytime the stop watch gives me about 33 sec from clicking ok to finish. But the CS2 timer gives me anywhere from 38sec to 50sec from each try.

Athlon 64 X2: New Memory Dividers and Multitasking Performance
Multitasking with Adobe Photoshop CS

The end result is far more tangible this time around, with DDR480 completing the Photoshop task in 6.5% less time than the same system with DDR400.

We used our Windows Media Encoder test here because in our original article, the WME test itself saw no benefit from DDR480, much like Photoshop CS. But putting the two together and tossing in some background music changed the picture; it changed things enough that we?d actually recommend using higher bandwidth memory in this case.

A difference might show up if you had an image larger than your available RAM..

But I went from from 67 to 34 by changing from a 3500 @ 2.4 to the X2 at 2.4 , while my RAM and HDD stayed the same.. So it looks like it scales pretty linearly with the CPU, all else being equal..

55 seconds

Not too shabby, and this gave me a reason to finally install Photoshop. I can just imagine all the wasted time I'll spend playing with it!

Is using just one filter to test preformance for a pc even accurate? I'm sure different filters will have different effects...I remember drag once saying that although many filters on the PC version of PS run faster as compared with the mac verison, the most used filters run faster on a G5 than they did on x86....
