AMD X6 1075T Overclock / Underclock Question

I'm not really sure how to explain this so I'm not having much luck finding an answer searching around. I can overclock my AMD X6 1075T to 4.125 GHz just fine. Temps are in the 40s using P95, but after a couple of minutes under full load it will drop to 2.2 GHz, then after a little bit goes back up to 4.125, then after a bit goes back down, etc.

I've tried at 3.6GHz at different voltages and same thing. I haven't had a lot of time to play around with it, but does anyone have any ideas? CNQ is disabled as is the Turbo. Temps stay under 50*C (water).

Any ideas? Thanks.

Do you have overdrive installed? It might be able to help you figure out what exactly is changing (bus/multiplier).

What is your mobo?

Just post whole system specs so we can help better please.

That sounds to me like a behaviour of a notebook CPU. Maybe by some kind of mistake your Windows performance options is not set on server but on lover spec? My first bet would be on that.

What is your water cooling solution? A traditional loop or a self-contained all-in-one? What is your cpu voltage?

It's entirely possible you (or the software) are misreading the CPU temps are you are experiencing thermal throttling. AMD's on die sensor does not provide per-core temp readings, and I don't think AMD have ever clearly stated which temp is the important one to keep under 60/62c - the "core" temp or the board sensor.

I would try backing down the OC and voltage until/if you no longer experience this issue and make note of the temps.

Ok, here's what I've got:

Motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-M/USB3
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1075T 3.0GHz
Cooler: Corsair CWCH50-1 Cooling Hydro Series CPU Cooler
RAM: Patriot 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
Power Supply: Corsair 700W
Hard Drive: Crucial 64GB m4 SSD SATA 6Gb/s / 1TB 5900 RPM
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 560 1024 MB
OS: Windows 7 64 Professional

The cooler is an all-in-one unit. I have it hooked up to a fan controller and have it running at 100% in a push/pull configuration with 4 other 120mm fans in the case so I'm pretty sure it's got good cooling. Perhaps temps are read wrong? I use CoreTemp, is there a better program to use?

Volts at 4.125 GHz were at 1.475. At 3.6GHz I was playing with the volts going from 1.475 on down. I got down to 1.4 before I ran out of time, and it was still doing it then. I use CPUz to check the frequency and P95 using max heat to stress test.

I've gotten BSODs or comp just freezes with overclocking but never the weird underclocking issue, so it's strange to me.

Any other ideas. I've got a busy work schedule this week this week so I don't have a lot of time to spend troubleshooting. I'll try it again late tonight and pay attention to see if it's the bus or multi that's changing.

Confirm that stock settings do not exhibit this issue. Are you familiar with Phenom 2/Thuban overclocking? At a minimum, the following should come into play: FSB/HTT, CPU multi, CPU-NB multi, HT link multi, Mem multi, Memory timings, CPU voltage, CPU-NB voltage, and memory voltage.

With the 1075 being a non-BE, at 3.6 you are running a 240 FSB/HTT, and without adjusting other values, you would also have a 2.4 CPU-NB (which will require more cpu-nb voltage), a 2.4 HT link (shouldn't hurt, but might want to run it at 8x to keep it near 2.0), and with an 8x Ram multi you would be running at 1920 (likely not doable, try 6.66 or even 5.33).

This might just be a basic OC issue where you need to individually test each piece for it's limits, then try combining them for your 24/7 OC.

Ok, here's what I've found out so far. The multiplier drops from 15x to 8x, and the reason I believe so far is the voltages.

I started at stock speed and bumped up the voltage to 1.5, benchmark until fail (which was only after about 15 seconds or so), then lower the voltage some and try again. I got all the way down to 1.375 and it failed (meaning the multiplier dropped down to 8x for a bit, but it would fail after a couple of minutes). I was trying at 1.35 volts and I think I saw it fail for a second or two, but wasn't sure...

Are there any programs that will log the bus & multiplier so I don't have to sit and watch this thing all the time? I'm kinda thinking that I've got a bad chip?

its the cool and quiet, when you use the processor you go at 100%, if its on idle, it reduces the power of the cpu ... i like it...

Please see the original post, the OP stated that CNQ is disabled.

This is an old post, and I think the OP has left but I'll chime in.

My hunch, as stated by Jovec, is thermal throttling. Go into BIOS and look for it. There should be an option to disable it.

^If it's actually throttling, shouldn't he actually fix the overheating first, before turning off any throttling??

If you disabled it in the BIOS then it has to be turning it back on somehow. I would start killing off processes...

Yes, you're correct.

I meant to say, and I forgot to add in my post, if he disables thermal throttling and the multiplier drops stop, then he can be pretty sure it's thermal throttling that's causing it and take the next step.

Right now it seems he's not sure what's causing the multiplier drops.
