Hi guys, I am decided on what to buy for a budget gaming system. I have 512 pc200 and a 9700 pro. All I need is a motherboard/cpu combo. $150 is the tops I will go, cheaper is better. I just saw an Athlon Mobile setup that I am very interested in. It is a Mobile 2500+ with motherboard that does 250 bus stable. I plan to run it at 200 bus. It costs $75 and i already called dibs on it and am close to paying. Here is the link: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=872869&page=1&pp=20
I also saw a Karaktu Celeron M 3.2/800 setup for $140. Which one do you think is better, or is there another better deal out there. How well will these perform in gaming and how do they stack up against a 2.8/533 P4 and Athlon 1800/266? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Few things first...

1) What games do you play?

2) What speed will you be running the mobile XP at?

BTW, that is damn good deal.

I will be running 200 fsb probably. I play HL2+mods mainly and the occasional Doom 3 and Halo.

Yeah, I was building a budget system. I bought everything from the forums:

$150 -- AMD 2800 XP-M (@2.6) / Asus A8N-Deluxe
$130 -- BBATI 9800 Pro (Flashed to XT)
$70 -- 1 gig Kinston Value Ram (New)
$50 -- 16x Nec DVD+/- RW (New)

I have a nice Lian-li case lying around that I'll throw everything in. I also had another optical drives, because two is better then one. I also have 260 GBs of HD space to throw in there. I'm looking at $400 out of pocket on a damn sweet comp. I'd rather stay one step behind the curve, and buy everyones used stuff when they're going nextgen.

Out of the options you laid out, I would either take the P4 or the Mobile. I would probably take the p4 because it is already 2.8 and you could get it to 3.1 or 3.2 with an overclock. Although you could OC the AMD proc to 3200 speeds, it will most likely suffer because of a smaller FSB.

I run an XP-M @ home on an old A7N8X board, 1 gig of RAM, 9500 PRO. I have the chip OC'd to 2GHZ @ stock voltage running air cooling. The chip doesn't even break a sweat, I'd OC it more but my old Asus board (rev 1.02) doesn't support higher multipliers than 12.5 or something close, I forget exactly. Bottom line, for the money you can't beat it and they OC like crazy, its a fun chip just because of that. I can still play most current games with decent detail and the system is great for surfing/large downloads, stuff like that.

I think the NF7-S v2 with a mobile for $75 is a great price!

EDIT: Look like your ram is PC2100. You'll need better than that to run @ 200 FSB. You could always pick up a stick of value ram (512MB PC3200) with the money left over

It was watercooled and doesn't have a heatsink, so which one should I buy for it. I am looking for something cheap and maybe able to hit 12X200.

The heatsink won't make a big difference in your O/C on air. Some, but not huge. The chip is by far the largest factor. As far as my choice, The Thermalright SI-97 would be my top choice, the SLK-948 U a second.

Just to let you know, my Athlon-XP mobile 2500+ runs at 2.4 Ghz (200 FSB), up from 1.8 Ghz. Thats 33% faster, and is in the area of a 3400+ or a 3600+

It far outperforms my friends Northwood 3.0 OC'd to 3.4 in games, but gets its but kicked in Archiving and video editing. It depends on what you do on the machine, I'm a gamer, and gamers pick AMD.

Are there any good heatsinks for $15 or so that include fans and keep it cool while being relatively quiet(not too big of a factor).

Simply put? No.

For the most part, the same things that make a good loud heatsink make a good quiet heatsink. And there is no such thing as a good cheap heatsink (that I've seen). For quiet operation the design of the heatsink is definitely even MORE important than for a loud heatsink.

If you're planning on 2400 MHz go for a good heatsink. Many bartons won't make it there. I owned two and one made it to between 2200 and 2300 and the other made it between 2300 and 2400. If you get one with a great stepping it will make it to 12x200 there with any decent heatsink.

It all depends on the chip.

I would not cheap out on the heatsink. I use a Alpha PAL8045 on my A XP 2500+ running at 2.2ghz and it works wonderfully. My temps max out at about 41 c under prime 95 or heavy gaming. I know I could push it farther, but my ram can't seem to handle the strain (Geil value ram).

That mobile is a great processor, I kinda wish I went that route instead of the desktop version.

personally I would say no. A heatsink is one area that I will only go for a reputable brand. Get a Alpha, Thermalright, or Zalman and you will have a garunteed good cooler. Geez, I bet even the Thermaltake hsf's are better than that one.

Spend a few more $ (aaround $30ish total) for a decent HSF if you really want to oc that processor.

You really don't think so. I am on a strict budget and $20 is the max I will spend. I want to run 11.5X200.

If $20 is all you can spend on a heatsink then my adice is to do nothing and wait until you can get all the proper parts. There are a few areas where cheaping out can have the most impact and the heatsink is one of them (the PSU would be another).

Seriously though, what kind of position are you in where you can't find another $10? Draw on a piece of paper with some crayons and ebay it, that should get you $10. The difference really is there in heatsink quality and cooling ability.

The one I recommened had like 300 revies and almost all of them are 5* and some people even mentioned using a 2500 Mobile at 3200 with 50 load. I will take your advice though. I am not stripped for cash but this computer has to come in at a certain price and I didn't want to waste too much for a heatsink. I already spent a good amount on the power supply staying away from the $10 600 watt ones. I will take your advice though. Could you post a lnk to a good heatsink/fan. Try to keep it under $25 shipped.

Hello All

Blinkme323

I am considering building a HTPC based the AMD mobile CPU. I can see that you are using the AMD mobile XP CPU too, however a 2500+ version.
Just wondering if you or any other have experience with this AMD mobil CPU: "AMD XP Mobile 2400+ (Barton), 35W, model: AXMD2400FJQ4C".

- What is the normal setting for this CPU regarding: core voltage, multiplier, FSB ...
- any mainboards that will run stable with this CPU? ( preferably micro-ATX versions )
