AMD XP-question about cores-Palamino, Thoroughbred

I'm asking here because DFI takes forever to answer questions, if they answer at all...

I'm going to install a new Bios for a DFI AK76-SN board to support the XP line so I can get mom and pops an Athlon XP2100 processor. The DFI website says "supports XP2100 Palamino" I can find XP Thoroughbreds everywhere, but are they interchangeable? I haven't kept on all the new cores for about a year and a half, so knowing how knowledgeable this crowd is can you direct me to a source or answer the question directly...If I put one of the new XPs in this board will it work?

Thanks!

Palamino is the first Athlon XP core, which added SSE support, as well as some other things I can't remember directly, over the Thunderbird core, the original SocketA Athlon.

The Thoroughbred is purely a die shrink, and slight voltage drop, no added bits. These overclock much better (normally, anyway!) than the Palamino. The Barton (latest core) adds another 256k L2 cache, for a total of 512k cache.

The Tbred 2100+ should work fine in the board if it supports the Palamino CPU.

there are several older motherboards that only support the palomino

so if the bios update only mentions support for 2100+ palomino then it may not work with a tbred cpu (but then again it very well could work also ... just no guarantee)

I thought i was the only person on earth actually using this motherboard. Anyway, i tried it today with an athlon xp 2100 thoroughbred and it doesnt work. The floppy drive seeked like normal, but all id get then was a black screen, no beeps or anything. I cleared the cmos and tried manually setting jumpers, and still nothing. After that I went back to my old processor and things work fine again, so i guess ill be waiting until i get an nforce2 board or something before i can use this new processor.

for both of you guys...

Grab an older processor. Any Duron or Tbird, even an older XP Palomino will do fine. Use it to flash a newer BIOS ROM onto your motherboard. This will update the processor recognition to properly identify the 0,13 micron Tbreds. This is most likely all that's necessary to run your new 2100+.

However, if you cannot find a proper BIOS file for your mobo, I'm pretty sure you can get a 2000+/2100+ Palomino at newegg. I've seen them there not long ago.

I am in the process of upgrading my comps here at home.

I will very soon (should have my new hardware in-hand this weekend) have an ABit KG7-Raid MoBo and XP (palomino) 2000+ that I will need to sell.

If you are interested, PM me. (this thread isn't a good place for haggling)

thx for the replies...not ready to purchase yet but will PM you when I am. I'm looking for some more upgrade components for my son's pc, but may upgrade the whole machine, so i'll probably try to get all the stuff at the same time...soon, maybe first of June for his graduation. I'm an over-the-road truck driver and have limited home time and limited on the road access to internet. I've saved your address and will get back when I can.
By the way, the current box I built (the DFI AK76-sn) already has a 1.2G T-bird and have already flashed most current Bios (3-4-2002). Thanks for the suggestion.

Sincere Thanks to you all!
