Backstory:
Running a few programs and then started to watch a movie, about 40 min into it my computer freezes, the video, the sound, etc... have to restart via the power button. I run just the movie, happens again about 30 min into it have to restart. Got me thinking, is there something, wrong this kind of thing had never happened before I moved back home and now it seems to happen quite often. One thing I do know is that is is hotter in my current room than it was back up in my dorm room.

So anyways I got motherboard monitor installed and it is reading that I have a 30C case temp and a 53C CPU Temp, might as well, a 45C PWM (which I think is the powersupply no?) and my gpu is at 37C. Now these are all idle temps. I have read that the CPU is pretty friggen high for idle, and dunno about the others. The GPU temp should be good I have an ati silencer on my card and it never gets that hot. But the cpu temp is disturbing me.

Specs:
AMD64 3400+ 1mb
Abit KV8-Pro Mobo
Ati X800xt
1gb ddr 400
(1) WD Raptor 34gb hdd
(1) WD 80GB wdd
430W PSU

Stock heatsink, 3 case fans, + 2 powersupply fans, ati silencer on the x800. Besides some dust I haven't changed much since I moved back home and would like to find out why all the sudden I am having all these problems, they appear to be temp related I think, it's the only thing I could think of that has changed. I tried to updated the BIOS on the abit mobo b/c I read that the kv8 had some problems with cpu temp readings but I am getting the same reading now as I did with my previous bios version. I also took out the cpu hs, cleaned it off, and put on a new coating of arctic silver 5, as well as cleaned most of the dust out of there.

Any ideas?

it seems like the prodlem is with your hsf installation. all your other temps are very good. how did you apply the as5? follow the instructions Here

Interesting, thanks for the tip. I had always put more on that that (not covering the entire thing, but more than they said there). But anyways, I am down to 42C right now, is that a more normal temp?

Thanks for the help.
edit: Well, might have jumped the gun there, after I restarted its hovering right around 53C again, check in my bios and it is reading the same thing. It appears MBM gave a bad reading that first time around.

Any more ideas?

I dont think 53C is too hot to cause stability issues....my 3400+ is currently idleing at 51C and when playing movies and games i have no issues. It is pretty hot today too...im normally around 45C otherwise.

i have a zalman 7000Alcu with dfi lanparty (i think the temps might be reading too high actually)

I think the problem stems from the fact that you have an Abit board. Abit have been notorious for years when it comes to inaccurate CPU temperature readings. I have an Abit board (AX8) and i've been getting a real mixture of readings. First i was getting idle temps of between 22-25c, which is great, except i'm using an FX-55 with the stock HSF, so those temps seem more than a little unlikely. Now i'm idling around 45-50c and under load getting anything from 55-73c. I'm fairly sure you're having the same problems as me with the inconsistancy of temp readings from Abit once again... The bottom line is though, you're not getting any sign of instability or system lock-up's/reboots, so i wouldn't worry about it too much...

Yeah I dunno why it is so high, I am just wondering about it because I had seen other people report temps alot lower.

In any case I am at the same temp now 51-53C. While I was in there I moved my raptor down to my second drive bay so it is alone in there, that sucker runs pretty hot so I don't think it would hurt to spread the heat around a bit instead of having it all in one drive bay.

No that IS the problem. I was having lock ups when watching movies and sometimes using apps like bit torrent and what not. As said above it locked up 2x on me last night while watching a movie (about 2:30 in length) and it has happened before on previous movies as well. It has locked up several times when running bittorrent as well.

I run a Winchester 3200+ and it idles at 33C and full load is at 42C so something is wrong with your heatsink.

I have an ABIT board as well. I actually I have the KV8-Pro. My temps are way off as well but I have had no stability problems whatsoever thus far, knock on wood.

Well if it isn't the board what else would I do to fix it?

What could be wrong with it though the thing is pretty straight foward and I am 100% sure I did it right.

Yeah the only reason I raise the question is because it has locked up on my several times and I am trying to figure out why it is doing so. I've noticed it lock up so far at least, only in bittorrent and while watching movies, but then again it never did this while I was back in my old place and has only recently started to happen(already reformated and what not).

Have you changed any hardware since then?
