Hello all. I'm just a bit curious. I'm going to be upgrading my computer here real soon. I currently have the amd64 3500+, on an ASUS A8V Deluxe mobo. Also, i have an x800 XT AIW.

Basically, i'm curious about a lot of things, and am seeking advice. I basically do strictly gaming on my computer, and i like to keep as up to date as possible.

Is there any point in staying with a 64bit amd processor and upgrading to windows xp x64 OS for gaming? Would this be of any advantage to me at all? I'm just wondering which processor is right for me, the AMD FX line, or 64.

2nd thing, which mobo would you recommend for performance and overclockability? I'm not very happy with my A8V Deluxe at all. If possible, a few recommendations on mobo's would be amazing.

3rd thing, is there much difference at all between the X800XT and the X850XT? I work at a computer store, so it wouldnt cost me much at all to sell my current vid card and buy the x850 at a discount.

Also, i've heard of people who run dual processors? Is it even worth it for gaming? I dont even know how, or which mobo enables it so i'm just a bit curious.

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

The high end 64 AMD's are basically the same as teh FX line, only they are not unlocked, so the FX is easier to OC. Depending on the model they might also have half the cache.

According to a review a XP64 is no benefiet to gaming, so that's got to be a personal choice for you, if you are getting a new OS then might as well get the 64 one.

I like MSI for motherboards, haven't been impressed with Abit in years, never liked ASUS much either.

I don't like ATI so I can't help you there, I always do AMD/Nvidia.

Dual processors will do nothing for gaming.

1: What kind of budget are you on? If you've go tmoney overflowing, go FX, if not, A64.
2: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
3: Yes, there is a little difference, but not by too much. The x800XT were rare, the x850XT aren't.

Other: Yes there are people who run dual-procs, no it won't help you in gaing. It's mainly for people who run multi-threaded applications and those who multi-task excessively like myself.

A AMDFX is just a top of the line AMD64. both have the same features except fx is a slightly different core. 64s are winchesters(yours) and the fx seires is clawhammers. fx line is built on 130nm fab and winnies are 90nm fab. both support 64bit instructions, sse2,3dnow, etc. stay with your cpu. it is more than enough. you can also probably overclock it to fx speeds and avbove(2.6ghz or more)

DFI lanparty NF4 deluxe or Sli depending on which you need. best ocer board out there for most people, but unfrotunately not the msot stable. the ATI Xpress200 boards are also excellent ocers as tested by anandtech as well as caoting substantially less($90 vs 130 for the dfi nf4 ultra and 230 for the dfi nf4 sli).

if you can, try to get a 6800u. it's as fast as the x850xt but will be sliable a year later to bump up performance. just dont expect sli to be a permanant upgrade option, because if you sli upgrade 2 years from now, there will be PS4.0 and WGF1.0, none of which any of the current cards support.

An FX is the clawhammer (1mb cache) core. The only difference between a FX-55 and a 4000+ is that its higher clocked and has unlocked (upwards) multipliers. Thus, if you downclock an FX-55, it should perform like a 4000+ (Clawhammer).

However, the new SD cores which are 90nm and have SSE3 with improved memory controllers should be able to kick the FX-55 around clock for clock. The new FX-57 is based on an SD core.

I say don't get an FX-55 because its based on 130nm and it's just OLD. I don't care if I get a slower SD, but the newer tech makes it much better.

You sound like you have a pretty decent setup from the few parts you mentioned. If I can ask, why are you considering upgrading so soon?

If you have money to burn.. don't upgrade..
Buy a prometeia phase change cooling system and OC the mofo out of your CPU.. it'll destroy anything

i like the prometia idea. that thing costs almost as much as my entire rig! i would wait a bit before upgrading. a lot of new technology is arising.

Unless you get two 6800u for SLI. You wouldn't be able to improve your gaming performance in a noticable way.

Even a FX-55 + x850xt pe would only make gaming a tiny bit faster.
The difference between a FX-55 and a 3500+ is fairly small,
and the dfference between a x800xt and a x850xt is even smaller.

Do not upgrade to x64, as it's not made for gaming. They are not even planning on ever releasing a home version of x64 because it is not designed for the home user.
It was designed for people that are pushing the 32 bit programs to the max, and it is more geared for server/workstation/network use and those doing digital work (where digital is programs like CAD).
