With the Intel P4 3.2 under $400 now and the AMD 64 slighty over, which do you all feel is the one to get?

Will not be overclocking at all...

Athlon64 looks like it thoroughly trounces the P4 in most tests between those two chips.

Go with an Athlon64 if you are actually looking to spend that much on a processor right now.

The $400 2.0 ghz Athlon 64 trounces the 3.2ghz P4? Really?

I thought it was back and forth (depending on the test) with the Athlon 64 FX 51 ($750) with that chip. Didn't know the non-FX 2.0 ghz (3200+) Athlon 64 performed that well.

Any reliable websites with this trouncing displayed?

I think he means the FX51. The A64 3200+ is about the same as a 3.2C.

I would get the AMD as it is 64 bit which will allow you to integrate any 64 bit OS or programs as they come along.

Well I guess Def should pull his head out since the author of the thread said athlon64 being near same cost as the p4 3.2c.....I haven't seen any trouncing and if you run multimedia programs like the p4 is still better and if you use some dual cpu threaded programs like tmpgenc it wont be close.....

I say get whatever you want....Can't go wrong with either in things most of us do around here....Do you plan on running 64bit OS like Linux or do some heavy scientific calculating get the AMD...If you like multimedia I say go with P4 as more and more programs will be optimized for HT which I think will have a bigger gain thenif any of the programs are 64bit....

I'd get the Athlon. The P4 3.2C is IMO not worth it. If you're going to go for a P4, get a 2.6C or a 2.8C, or even a 3.0C (but even these are a tad pricey).

If you're going spend $400, I'd say go for the FX.

So you are recomending he spend 750 dollars for a cpu instead???? I don't think the additional 350 dollars is worth it for the performance advantage it has on either the 64/3200+ or the p4 3.2c....He has stated no ocing so then that definitely doesn't sound good...

Pentium 4 for multimedia or multitasking. AMD64 for games, business apps, number crunching, and future 64-bit compatibility if you are interested.

No, an amd athlon 64(non fx) does trounce a p4 3.2C in games. They are pretty equal in most other stuff, and the p4 is little faster in media encoding. the athlon 64 was meant to kill P4, which it does well, and the athlon 64FX was meant to kill prescott, which it may depending on the prescott's performance. Get the athlon 64 3200+ and your games will fly.

My question is this: Will my Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu fit on the A64 3200 processor?

I can't say for sure(not being too familiar with it), but it also depends on the motherboard layout on whether certain heatsinks fit or not.

the CNPS-7000 series does include mounting hardware for A64 boards. Whether there is enough space (caps, nb heatsink, etc) is another question and it depends on the mobo
