When should we expect this chip? Have they said weither or not it will be socket A still or what?

The Palimino/Athlon4 is socketA and should start around 1.53Ghz
The sucessor to the Palimino is the ThoroughBred and it will also be socketA.

I'm fairly confident one of those two cores will make 2Ghz, and both will be SocketA.

I would "ESTIMATE" around q4/01 - q1/02. As Noriaki said, it should be either Palo or ThouroughBread (sp?)... although I would suspect Palo to be there first... Anyway, just my estimations...

AMD 2.0ghz... I don't think they can hit it on a .18um process. And their .13um process isn't expected until 2nd half of 2002. So, fall of 2002 would be my guess.

possibly we could have a convential overclock of 2 Ghz by the end of this year to the beggining of next

Wingznut PEZ,

Is AMD really moving that slowly on .13u? Isn't Intel going to this process by the end of this year?

Cheers

I second that notion, but then again, AMD may surprise us and eak out 2 ghz on the current .18 micron fab.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

wingznut - i believe AMD is going to .15u before .13u, for whatever reason, and that part may be good for 2 GHz.

tualatin is getting pretty close, and its a .13u p3 (mostly for notebooks but i bet its faster than a lot of p4s)

moore's law is what 30 years old now and still holding true. If you reallly want to know, read up on moore's law and there's a 99% chance you'll get the month that it will come out =)

I'd be shocked if they went to .15um. There would be no point, because there's no cost or performance advantage in doing so. So, the only reason that they wouldn't go to .13um, is if they didn't have the technology. And while .13um lithography is more tricky than previous die shrinks, I think they can figure it out.

Wingz... Isn't Thouroughbread (sp?) suppose to be a .13u chip? I thought its on the roadmaps for a q1/02 release.... if so then they may be closer to .13 than we thought...

Yeah, it was on the roadmaps for 1st half of 2002. But I'm guessing it'll get pushed back just like the Hammers did. Just my prediction, for entertainment purposes only. Not to be used to supplement your income.

The last rumor that I saw about the .13um AMD's, is them being "announced" in late spring/early summer. And then it's still a couple months away.

Just hope AMD aligns themselves with IBM not Motorola,it appears to be happening.
IBM has a proven copper process ,the SOI (silicon on insulator)is an IBM gem and Ibm has been
working on the technicalities of .13 micron process longer than Intel.
AMDs palamino and Hammer chips have been delayed so that they could be redesigned to accept
soi from the beginning of production ,soi will help chips run cooler.
The trick in the copper process according to those companies who have a copper process ,motorola and IBM, is the polishing of each layer .IBMs process is patented and took years to develop ,I cannot imagine Intel developed a similar process in a few months.
It was not so long ago Intel was saying that neither the copper process or .13 micron chips
would be required for a long time ,if ever. They were counting on other materials.

Adul..I think its an awesome idea. Lets make it, patent, and sell it. Watch out Bill, here we come!!!

What would make you think that Intel has only been working on Cu and .13 "for a few months"?

Also, the Athlon 4 won't be made on SOI. The Hammer might be, but it wouldn't surprise me if they found better ways to implement their circuits/junctions, and not have the need for the much more expensive SOI wafers.

Thoroughbred will be socket-A? Is that official?

So Hammers will be the next socket change for AMD CPU line?

Also, what's going to happen with Athlon's FSB? Is 133 MHz the maximum they'll hit?

Because I wouldn't mind buying that Tyan AMD760MP board at the end of summer if I have a upgrade path down to a dual Thoroughbred as long as PC2100 DDR is good enough until then.

I like my pop tarts cold but marshmellows might be a different story.

Peemo asked:

<< Is AMD really moving that slowly on .13u? Isn't Intel going to this process by the end of this year? >>

On an April 6 article on E E Times, Intel Claimed First Blood in 300 mm wafer shift.

<< Intel Corp. has fabricated its initial ICs with 130-nanometer (0.13-micron) design rules on 300-mm wafers at its D1C development fab, the company said this week. Intel claims to be the first in the industry to combine the advanced process on the larger wafers. >>

Industrial observers also believe that Intel has a 6-months lead over AMD in transition to 0.13 micron process and a 2-years lead in moving to 12-inch wafer.
