I enabled this thing in my bios and then installed the driver for it. I did this right when I built my new machine and had a GF3 in there awaiting my 6800 GT. So I never actually played any games except starcraft + tribes I. Thus I never really tested the hardware.

Flashforward to last Friday. I get my new shiny 6800 GT. I toy around in Farcry and turn up the settings ect. It seems ok but nothing spectacular performance wise. I try BFV and it is like a slideshow. Since I didnt have time to play with it on Friday I just figured it was some issue in the bios.

I come home today and sure enough fastwrites is enabled. I turn it off and some of the stuttering is gone but still getting what I considered subpar performance. I was also getting some wierd instances of the machine literally locking for 10 seconds and then coming back to life in games. So I start to trouble shoot by turning down the settings. I get Farcry to work good but the levels of detail werent any higher than my 5900. BFV however was a slideshow at resolutions and details I played on my 5900.

I installed DX9c and fire up dixdiag and to my horror it is showing 1100mhz for the cpu clock. I check my WinXP computer properties box and it shows 2.2Ghz. Ok this is wierd I think and reboot and check the bios. Sure enough it says 2.2Ghz. Ok back into Windows and I download wcpuid and fire it up. Sure enough it shows 1100Mhz. At this point I think "hmm I wonder is the thing is in sleep mode but not coming out". So I reboot and disabled it via the bios. Reboot and now wcpuid is showing 2200Mhz and BFV runs maxed without issue, Farcry the same.

So I guess my question is has anybody been experiencing issues with this feature putting the CPU in a low power mode and not bringing it out when it is needed? I would love to have it enabled as it kept my CPU temp around 30C along with my case temps. Now that the chip is full speed it only added 7C but I would like it to work if possible.

Any solutions to this problem would be appreciated.

Thank you

I never really trusted AMD cool and quiet, especially since you never gain full performance again. Your best bet would be to do a reformat and reinstall of XP, cause it sounds like you have many driver conflicts going on there. Did you enable cool and quiet on a fresh re-install or did you just one day decide to test it out?

I installed when the machine was built. I can disable it via the bios and did. Now that it is disabled via the bios everything is fine. But if I can still use it and have it run full speed that would be great.

What do you mean you never gain full performance again?

Try Driver Cleaner before you go throught that much trouble. Immediate reformat is a bit extreme, unless you're among the unemployed and have plenty of time.

Try running Prine95 in the background, and then turn CPUID again. Prine95 will suck up all available processing power, which will cause the CPU to run at full speed.

NOT using Cool-n-quiet is like sitting in your car at a stoplight and keeping the gas petal floored. Your CPU just spins it wheels twice as fast...

My guess is you haven't selected minimal power management under power options/power schemes.

Make sure you follow Asus' instructions for enabling CnQ EXACTLY. This is the basic idea, at least for my K8V SE Deluxe:

Enable CnQ & APIC 2.0 in BIOS
Install Asus CnQ software & processor driver from AMD
Change Power Management settings to "Minimal Power Management"

That shoudl do it, but I could be forgetting a step.

works fine for me, And I have seen the CPU go to full power when needed. I have experianced no lag thus far.

Anybody get Cool n Quiet working after installing Service Pack 2? It stopped working for me.

Update: I reinstalled the AMD64 drivers and it works again.

If you have an A64(non-FX) and motherboard that supports it, it lowers the voltage and speed of the cpu depending on the load. With the older C0 cpus it went down to 800MHz/1.3V/35W while the newer CG cpus go down to 1000MHz/1.1V/22W. There are 2-3 steps in between depending on the cpu.
