Holy crap this is awful. Nvidia is going to have a field day if new Maxwell cards really are coming in the next 4-6 weeks. Nvidia is going to be able scale Maxwell up way better than AMD is scaling GCN right now. Price premiums out the yin-yang.

I dont know, maybe the die size is 250mm and AMD can price it at any value.

Pretty much a useless chip and nowhere near Maxwell in efficiency.
So much marketing for nothing. What the hell are you doing AMD?

They are doing a lame refresh as we expected.

Smaller bus, mature node = Cheaper to build, to replace Tahiti.

I don't consider it progress but certainly the bean counters at AMD do. Call it for what it is, a weak refresh.

Oh really?
Why don't you go check out Tech Report's glowing review of R285.
Slick new features,quiet and fast...for $249.
As a new mid range card it ticks all the boxes.

This says it all:

Why would this card be a better buy than 280/X or even 7950/70s still on sale? 3GB of ram allows it to run a few AAA games at ultra as well as able to handle 4K texture mods.

Its a worse buy and for a refresh, that's just wrong.

You can get a R280 for cheaper (certainly here its a lot cheaper) and its got 3GB of ram. All the slick new features don't mean jack when its slower and uses more power than the old 7970!

What marketing? They only said it was better than a 760 and some numbers about bandwidth efficiency. And the product does it.
Also TPU power consumption numbers has something wrong, in no other review the 285 has that horrible score, but its not an efficiency marvel neither.

I mean, it got the XDMA instead of CF and it got the audio engine onboard.
But other than that, what else is new against the R9 280?
Its almost like a rebrand, except its not since its a new chip.

Why would anyone be excited for this chip? I admit, I was, because I was hoping to finally see an AMD card taking on Maxwell, but no.

You would be insane to CF these in late 2014 with 2gb vram. So no, that's not a bonus feature thats worthwhile.

I expected a refresh but was hoping for improved efficiency but nope. It's horrible on all fronts. The decision to go with 256 bit bus and 2gb vram is purely $$. They got nothing ready to fight Maxwell and these cards need to compete on heavy price discounts.

Yeah, I`d gladly choose R9 280X for $269 over R9 285 for 249.
Sure you may save a couple of watts, but you are trading away 384bit for 256bit for what, 20 bucks?
That bandwidth comes in handy at higher resolution and when overclocking the cores

That doesn't say the truth, we all know how awesome 7950s OC. The higher power use on the R285 compared to the 7950 via TPU means a 7950 owner can OC it and get faster performance for similar power use. Still retaining the 3gb advantage.

Fail card is fail.

I thought you knew about video cards...

How does the XDMA Crossfire bus and True Audio DSP perform on the 7950?
Oh and the 4K H264 decode engine too.

Umm...:|

Please...

You go ahead and spend $500 on a CF R285 setup with 2GB in late 2014. See how awesome that is.

True Audio will mean more when its used well in more games, currently there's no indication. Mantle? Sure you can sell that.

4K decode is nice, but if you had a 4K monitor WTF are you doing with a R285?!

Narrower memory bus means fewer memory traces on the board, and fewer memory chips. The GPU chip isn't the only thing that costs money in a graphics card.

And that benefits AMD how exactly? Do they produce the PCB or buy the memory chips?
Many people thought the GPU would get less complex and smaller - the contrary is true. Why? Hidden CPU on board? :hmm:
