So just sabre rattling or is this a mild show of force to try to calm our NATO allies.....hmmm

http://www.fool.com/investing/gener...nds-missile-destroying-warship-into-russ.aspx

File this story under the rubric: "Be careful what you wish for." When the U.S. guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) departed Norfolk Naval Base to take up station at the Spanish naval base in Rota two months ago, it set off alarm bells in Moscow.

Accusing the U.S. of attempting to set up a "strategic offensive potential" in Europe, Russian President Putin loudly condemned the move. U.S. officials calmly explained that the Cook, and its sister ships USS Ross (DDG-71), USS Carney (DDG-64), and USS Porter (DDG-78), were headed to Spain to set up a missile shield against the Iranian missile threat -- and posed no threat to Russia. But Russian State Duma foreign affairs committee Chairman Alexei Pushkov declared this explanation "fake."

In the Russians' view, you see, the presence of a fleet of U.S. destroyers in Europe, armed with a version of the Aegis missile defense system tweaked to shoot down ballistic missiles, is a threat aimed squarely at Russia's nuclear arsenal.

Ever since Russian armed forces invaded and annexed the Ukrainian province of Crimea last month, the U.S. government has struggled to find an appropriate response. Trade sanctions and visa freezes on Russian government officials could punish Russia for what it's done in Crimea. But what could the U.S. do to deter further aggression?

This week, it appears the Obama administration hit upon its solution. It took the USS Donald Cook and sent it to Russia. Armed with new Standard Missile-3 IB weaponry from Raytheon (NYSE: RTN ) , the Cook boasts a robust version of Lockheed Martin's (NYSE: LMT ) Aegis ballistic missile defense system capable of shooting down supersonic, high-trajectory missiles such as Russia uses to carry its nuclear warheads. The warship was modified for ballistic missile defense (BMD) duty as part of a $22 billion project to build shipborne and land-based missile defense stations to protect Europe from Iranian long-range missiles. But just as President Putin predicted, it appears to have use in countering Russian threats as well.

Needed to be done, I agree with the move personally, if they did hadn't look at the news today to verify I guess.

Yep the Aegis is the big boy system above THAADS and Patriots.

So we needed to give the Russians more of a reason to justify their future actions in a follow up response. Awesome.

Probably for both sabre rattling and to calm the NATO allies. Putin just chuckle at this showing. Putin is playing a totally different game, a very dangerous and costly game for everybody.

A move like this provokes without a tangible benefit. It does not make sense.

Is anyone going to start a nuclear war over Ukraine?
No. I am not convinced NATO would go to nuclear war over it's own member Baltic states, much less Ukraine. Russia is not going to start nuclear war over the Ukraine either. They wanted Crimea, because it preserves their Black Sea dominance and denies Sevastopol to NATO ships. Sh!tholes like Donetsk and Kharkiv are not something Russia needs more of. Take US rust belt, combine it with Appalachian coal country, add Soviet style inefficiency, and post-Soviet style corruption, and that would be the grand prize in such a war. EU may want Russia to take it off their hands, but it won't be so lucky.
So the whole point is moot. These ships are there for radar intelligence, that's about it.

Huh? The US constantly has AEGIS class destroyers and cruisers in the med. They've been doing so since the late 80's/early 90's when the Ticonderoga class were first commissioned. These days all destroyers and cruisers are AEGIS capable.

The thread title is deceptive, anyway. Rota, Spain is not Russian waters, or anywhere near them.

Rota, Spain is where incoming and outcoming battle groups transfer command/duty on Med cruises. Been there several times. Rota was the first foreign port I visited and it was on my first Med cruise in 1981.

Ukraine Crisis Exposes Gaps Between Berlin and NATO
... Nobody doubts today that Russia would be able to overrun and occupy eastern Ukraine. The German government believes that preventing such an eventuality is the task of diplomacy. In any case, the erstwhile Western military deterrent has been weakened considerably...

Looks to me that whatever is going to happen in the Ukraine, is up to Putin. And so far, what he has done hasn't hurt him, or Russia, at all...

Hitler was pretty popular when he annexed Austria into the Greater Germany. The Russian economy already has felt the effect of Putin's action, of course in the next few years, Putin will blame the West for Russia's economy. The above poster has made an excellent point, Ukraine isn't a country you want to fight over, it's going to take a lot of investment to turn Ukraine around, whoever is in charge. Ukraine is a big mess.

I believe you are correct. Ultra nationalist western Ukrainian "protesters" toppling the govt in Kiev gave Putin all the room he needed to act. Right, wrong, or indifferent, he's shown that he's willing to act to "protect" ethnic Russians & such in states formerly part of the USSR, and that he will likely continue. There was a lesson to be learned when he invaded South Ossetia, formerly part of Georgia, one that ultra nationalist Ukrainians chose to ignore. If they keep acting stupid, Putin will likely take back Eastern Ukraine which has an ethnic Russian majority. And there's not a fucking thing anybody will do about it, other than some ethnic Ukrainians & Russians dying in the process accompanied by squealing from the West. If the ethnic Ukrainians in the western half of the country act stupid enough, they'll get stomped. Like it or lump it, that's just the way it is. I certainly don't like it.

It came to be that way through a great deal of western meddling in Ukraine, aggressive anti- Russian Neocon foreign policy carried forward into the Obama Admin, an attempt to put another Nato Ally on Russia's southern border. It was all part of the Big Game, using Ukrainians as pawns. Ineptitude on the part of the Ukrainian govt has been an enormous part of it, as well.

I just hope that cooler heads prevail & that the parties actually involved find a peaceful way to sort it out.

The thread title is not in the least bit deceptive -- the full title was.... America Sends Missile-Destroying Warship Into Russian Waters. President Putin Presumably Not Pleased. had you bothered to read the article -- This week, it appears the Obama administration hit upon its solution. It took the USS Donald Cook and sent it to Russia.

Now THIS is how a leader should act. Russia should not be allowed to invade and intimidate countries without consequences. If the President really wanted to make them think twice, he would have the ship do a port call in Ukraine.

Which port? Crimea is Russia now, and they won't be welcome in Russian speaking Odessa, it may even trigger riots when Ukraine already has plenty to deal with in the east.
