I found that on Google. I knew I recognized that one guy who played the guitar from Cheyenne. It seems sort of unfair.

Well this is just getting ridiculous and fake now. So guys like Jason Castro and David Archuleta have obviously been in front of people before. It means their whole "Awww....look at me, I'm just a cute shy little teenager. I'm not talented at all, I'm just so humble" schtick is just a bunch of crap.
What are the rules on this anyway? How do they define "pro" now?

Contestants are not permitted to have any current record deals or talent management agreements (though they may have had one at some point in the past). Contestants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents eligible to work full-time and, for the first three seasons, had to be 16 to 24 years of age on October 19 of the year of audition. Since the fourth season, the upper age limit was raised to 28 with an earlier cutoff date, August 4, to attract more mature and diverse contestants.
Others who are ineligible include: those who made the top 40 or farther of past seasons; people employed with affiliates of Fox, Fremantle, 19, (e.g., its sponsors, subsidiaries and parent companies); those holding recording or management contracts and those who are not US citizens or permanent residents.
These pros spoil the perceived amateur spirit of the show, but it's all within the rules apparently:Originally posted by: yovonbishop

I'm not exactly sure. It seems that just about anyone can come in and as long as they sing well or can make for an interesting show, they can get a ride to Hollywood. At least I don't see too many Sanjayas in the making this year. At least that one Danny Noriega seems like he might actually be able to sing so I might be able to tolerate him a bit better.

Oh well, just enjoy the show and not sweat the details.
Formal training does not affect amateur status. Anway, it was my mistaken perception that the contestants were never professionals. Still, it's just TV entertainment, so as long as it's enjoyable, doesn't really matter.Originally posted by: MrChad

The show has always been about "undiscovered talent", not "best amateur vocals". Should they exclude contestants that have had formal voice training?

Give 'em a chance. I'm sure they all had big time nerves.Originally posted by: Rage187

I like quite a few of the girls actually. I think Amanda is great but may be fairly limited. I do think that Amy Davis and Kristy Lee Cook need to go home tonight though. Looking back through the clips last night they were by far the worst IMO.

Simon keeps telling Amanda she is limiting herself. If she doesn't break out and show some different stuff next week it's not going to be good for her.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of. I hope she surprises us though. I really like her - I agree with Simon that's she is truly an authentic rocker.
I'm still on the fence with that ex-boybander who says he's a rocker now. Don't get me wrong, I think he sings well, but he doesn't say "rocker" to me.
