LOS ANGELS (AP) -- The Associated Press has learned that David Hernandez will remain on "American Idol," despite his past as a male stripper.

Hernandez will perform Tuesday night as planned, said a person close to the show who is not authorized to comment publicly and asked not to be identified.

The 24-year-old finalist from Glendale, Ariz., once worked as a stripper at Dick's Cabaret, appearing fully nude and performing lap dances for the club's "mostly male" clientele, club manager Gordy Bryan said Monday.

"Idol" contestants are narrowed down this week to the final 12 finalists. All the singers, including Hernandez, have been unavailable for interviews.

"He had the look and the type that people like, so he made pretty good money here," Bryan said.

According to Bryan, Hernandez steadily worked at the club for three years until September 30, 2007.

"He never renewed his licensing with the state, so he hasn't been on my roster since then," Bryan said.

Bryan said he was aware that Hernandez was a vocalist, but that Hernandez never sang at the club. Bryan said he now believes Hernandez stopped working at the club because of his participation in "American Idol." Hernandez has never been referred to as a stripper or former stripper during the Fox singing competition.

Rumors of a stripper past ? along with photos of a scantily clad Hernandez working as a bartender at gay nightclub Burn ? were first posted last week on VoteForTheWorst.com, a site that encourages "Idol" viewers to vote for "the bad and truly entertaining contestants."

"It was like moths to a flame," said VoteForTheWorst.com founder Dave Della Terza. "As soon as I posted that, we started getting 10, 20 letters every single day from people saying, 'Yeah, he's a stripper in Phoenix.'"

Terza and other members of VoteForTheWorst.com community scoured MySpace, Photobucket and other social networking and photo sharing sites to find information and images of Hernandez. Terza said he contacted the club to confirm the Internet chatter, but they never got back to him.

"They said they couldn't give me a statement before talking to their lawyers," said Terza.

Hernandez, who originally auditioned for "Idol" in San Diego on July 30, 2007, is in the Fox singing competition's top 16 contestants. Last week, he earned rave reviews from the judges after his performance of The Temptations' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." He is scheduled to perform with the other male contestants on Tuesday's show.

David Cook and Jason Castro were the best of the bunch last night. I haven't been a big fan of either one, but both of them did really well with their songs.

I liked Luke Menard's Wham song, but he was at the bottom of the list before last night, and I don't think he did well enough to save his chances (especially after Simon's comments).

I didn't think David Archuleta's song was all that great, but he'll coast into the later rounds.

My bet is that Luke Menard and Chikezie get the ax on Thursday.

chikezie should have gotten the ax a couple of weeks ago. i thought he was the weakest of the final 12 guys. luke will probably go as well, but he does have a good voice. he can actually sing, the voice might not be well suited for american idol type audience but he does have vocal skills. mb he should have tried for danny in the grease thing last year.

I agree completely. I thought almost all of the guys did exceptional last night and will be sad to see them go home on Thursday (with the exception of Luke Menard because I can't stand his voice).

All the girls need to go home except for Carly. She understands the music better than the rest of those posers. I don't get why people were so crazy about Brooke's "Love is a Battlefield" performance. It made absolutely no sense. The words and the minimalist acoustic guitar playing did not match. It sounded ok, but the words and music were contradictory. Also, I like acoustic guitar, but it gets old if you don't have versatility. Brooke has no versatility. go home Brooke.

I think Chikezie is gone this week. My gf loved his version of that Luther Vandross song, so she voted for him. She got through on the first time, which never happened to her before, so she hit redial and got right though again. I crack up & say she must be the only one voting for him, so she did it again & got right through. All told she voted over 30 times for him, and never got a busy signal.

I thought the guys were the best the week with Jason Castro & David Cook being my favs. I think Luke will be joining Chikezie.

Asia'h & Brooke were my favorite girls, and I think Amanda saved herself from going home. I think Ramiele should be going, because she absolutely ruined my favorite Phil Collins song. Thanks to her little picture scandal though, she's got no worries. I loved Kady's version of that Queen song, but not everyone is a Highlander fan, so I think she's in trouble. I don't get why Simon keeps ragging on her personality either, I think she's adorable.

Amanda finally had a decent performance last night. I think that Kady and Kristy Lee Cook are headed home tonight. Kady did okay, but she needed to blow people away to survive this week and I don't think she did that. Cook butchered that Journey song, IMO.
