Reactive armor is a once off. It's helpful but, doesn't help once it's been used. An automated turret isn't worth shit until it's proven in combat.

So it can survive a hit that would kill a normal tank and takes twice as many hits to kill and that's a bad thing? A bullet proof vest is a one off too, but if you get shot you'd be happy to get the one.

I like tanks.
What's the replacement for the Abrams?????

Why do we need a replacement for the Abrams? WTF are we going to get into a land war with that has something better? The last major tank battle we fought was more than 25 years ago. Since then keeping the Abrams alive has been money pissed away.

Reactive armor can be added to the Abrams as well. The point being the significantly lighter T14 depends on it because it doesn't have the heavy armor the Abrams does. It depends on it's intercept system and I wonder how many threats it can handle at the same time. I rather doubt it can differentiate between rpg, artillery and, kinetic weapons.

Only if we leave NATO.

If we leave NATO tank battles might be a thing for Europe, but sure as hell not for us. The Abrams is probably going to fade away and get replaced by nothing before it ever gets into another major tank battle. The majority of the guys crewing the Abrams now were not even born yet the last time it was in major battle.

The idea we can hole up in America while the rest of the world goes to hell, is extremely foolish, short sighted and, unrealistic.

The idea that Europe can use us to provide their defense in perpetuity so they can spend on other things is 1000 times more foolish, short-sighted and unrealistic. If we pull out of NATO the western Europe powers would just have to spend more and build their own tanks.

I agree. Do you realistically think they'd be allowed the time to given Putin's expansionism?

You have to wonder how good that new Russian tank really is. The specs that are being quoted for them might be gross exaggerations... we really won't know until they see combat.

Besides, this is Russian News we're talking about. They might just be cardboard mockups in those videos.

Does M1 Abrams stand a chance against Russian T-14 Armata?

The Abrams because the Russian tank would be broken down or destroyed by air power before it was even rolling into the area.

Hmm, actually maybe the Russian tank since the only time they'll probably meet in "combat" is Russia sending one to do a big op of showing it blowing up one of the Abrams that ISIS hijacked from the Iraqi military. The funniest part is that it probably would've already been taken out by American air support, and it'll be a complete and total sham and they'd probably use a video game again to claim the Abrams was fully working.

Do you realistically believe that Putin is going to roll his tanks through the Fulda Gap and try to conquer Europe by surprise? Seriously? C'mon, that's an old bogeyman tale used to fuel military spending and Tom Clancy plotlines. Russia is not close to who they were at the height of the Cold War and Putin doesn't have anything close to the power to pull that off now even if they had the power to do it then. Which they probably didn't.

I'm all for NATO, but on this Trump is 100% right. We're getting screwed because other NATO members are not spending their mandated minimums. They're counting on us to pick up the slack and they're not all that afraid of Russia anymore because they know Russia doesn't have the power it used to have. We should pull out of NATO, not as a new era of American isolationism, but simply to force the hand of the countries taking advantage of us and hopefully leverage that to re-write the charter to something more equitable. Let's see how Western Europe feels after they do the math on whether it's better to spend what they promised to spend so that we don't have to cover their shortfalls or whether it's better to lose us entirely and have to build their own armies up to 10 times present size. I'm thinking they'll be at the bargaining table before Putin even gets briefed that it's happening.

I had part of the Fulda Gap for fire planning when I was a Forward Observer and Fire Support Sergeant. Of course that was the 80s.

That's very cool, thanks for your service. Have you ever read any of the WW3 military novels that centered on WW3 starting up in Europe like Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy, Team Yankee by Harold Coyle, Red Army by Ralph Peters or Ian Slaters stuff? They all were really focused on that area and I was wondering how close they had it to what you were training for.

I may have read Clancy's book but I don't recall. I am a Clancy fan.

replacement for the Abrams? A swarm of self aware drones hardened against EMP. Pennies on the dollar.
