Does anyone know where I can get a legit non pirated (I will pay) downloadable copy of the original American Mcgees Alice. I had the disc at one point in time and I dont know where it went. I think DLC is easier anyways. I appreciate the help guys. Thanks.

Wait, does this have anything to do with the new one that sucks balls?

Fuck that shit dude, just torrent it. No guilt, you have a code.

Thats no joke lol. I figure people wanna play the first one to get the gist of the story. Kinda like the dreamcast versions of shenmue that are through the roof high and hard as shit to get ahold of when you can get it for free off of DCISO lol.

Actually what I heard is the new one sucks cuz they kicked American McGee himself off the project a long time ago. Rumor on the internet is theres a rush to grab the original so people can see what the fuss was all about.

I actually have the original in the box with all the stuff it came with. TBH, the notebook it came with was better than the actual game, just due to the overall atmosphere it added. I think it's the one with the knife or whatever before they changed it. It's a cool game and all, haven't played the new one.

I had two copies at one time. My dad thought it looked cool so he got me one a while back after I already had it.

Lost them both a while ago. Would sell them on Amazon now if I could.

Get the new game, it comes with a copy of the old one. And they smoothed out the code so it actually runs on my fiances win 7 machine, our original copy of the old game was bad about hard locking and blue screening the system.

PS: The new game, while maybe not as classy as the old version, is BLEEPING awesome. Actually has some replay value (though slightly limited). The collection system makes you actually want to fight through the harder difficulties.

The original Alice wasn't that great. i have the original discs and i finished playing it when it first came out. There is no replayability.

The new game has all of the faults of the old game - both are too long and the few great original ideas gets repeated till you get utterly sick of them.

Alice MR has way better graphics than the original but it is a console port and a platformer - great PhysX effects and the ability to run higher resolution and over 30 FPS (and edit the files) make it look and run much better for the PC than on the consoles.

i reviewed it for ABT. Controls suck but the story is a worthy continuation of the original. Spectacular artwork and excellent level design keeps you playing.

That's sacrilege

Maybe by today's standards the original isn't that great, but back then it was a unique game with a twist on the standard shooter genre. It had an immerse environment that pulled you in and kept you coming back for more.

I know for a limited time EA's Origin d/l service had the old game available if you pre-ordered, but they pulled that right after The Madness Returns shipped.

You and your nostalgia for old games.

i played Alice when it first came out. i upgraded my PC to play it better. i did not say that it was awful - i said it "wasn't that great". It is a platformer.

Alice wasn't overall great. It was way too long and the episodes were stretched out to the breaking point. Alice is ultimately hack and slash. They took the clever idea of the children's toys as weapons and never ran with it. Another BORING shooter that was cleverly wrapped in fantastic art and level design to distract you from the same elements repeated over-and-over.

Madness Returns isn't much different than the original and the graphics are much better. The artwork and level design is a tie - awesome in both games (for their times).

As to the free digital copy of the original Alice; it was available free to those who pre-ordered Madness Returns. i don't believe the offer is still open. Maybe i should sell my disks.
D: fifty bucks!?!!!?! i'll never play it again!

You had to pre-order some special edition from Origin in order to get the original game. The offer went away as soon as Madness Returns was released. This seems like an odd business decision given that there appear to be others out there who are willing to spend a few bucks on a legit version.

I can't help it, today's games by and large can't hold a candle to what was going on back then with level design, art work and gameplay.

But saying Alice wasn't that great is like saying Michelangelo's work sucked.

I guess you (obviously) took a different feeling from the original then me. I didn't play a lot of shooters back then, RtCW and maybe UT so Alice was ground breaking for me.

----

Someone has the original on ebay for $30... lol a steal compared to $50.

For me it was the crappy controls and awkward chance jumps. The game itself was cool, but those kinda ruined the overall experience.

Comparing Alice to Michelangelo's work is ridiculous; Alice was a fairly flawed but decent shooter/platformer.

i guess you didn't play many platformers nor shooters. My point is, if you liked the original, you will probably like Madness Returns as it is a continuation of the same story and it plays very much like it.

Figured I'd bump this in case anyone's learned of a place you can buy digital downloads. It's still not on Steam. I've been playing Alice Madness Returns and I like it.

I mean, I bet the gameplay will soon get old but it's the story I play for.

It wasn't go for $5 last year, it's been a rather rare and desirable game for quite a while. I've seen new copies sell for a few hundred dollars.

That is correct. I have sold a couple of big boxed versions of the game on e-bay over the last few years....you get between $45-$75 for a game in excellent shape.

I've been playing Madness Returns the past couple of days - hasn't gotten old for me yet. The artwork and level design really is unprecedented in comparison to everything else these days.

Word of note: if you go to the bottom of your AliceEngine.ini file, and change "GIsSpecialPCEdition" to TRUE, it will unlock all of the DLC and the original Alice game. There's also a "mature language filter" in there that you can disable.

While I'm at it, this thread was super useful in optimizing the game for me.

Whats American Mcgee's claim to fame anyway? I bought a game off a clearance rack once called American Mcgees "Bad Day L.A." That is possibly the worst piece of dung i have ever played. Right up there with THQ's offerings on the SNES.
