I guess when @fskimospy called Greenman smart he meant the kind of smart that is regressively stupid, willfully ignorant, purposely obtuse and irredeemable.
Luckily more people are for zoning than against it. It comes from the desire to not live in a shithole. Everyone want's to live in a nice place, and will work hard to do it. Some people want to make everything fair by forcing ev
Generally speaking when people who support restrictive housing are confronted with the incredibly obvious consequences they invent reasons why it wasn’t really their ideas that led to a catastrophe, it’s some other reason like mental illness or drug addiction.Well it's basically attractive lie right? Zoning is explained as say not allowing a chemical plant to be built next to your house when what it really means in practice is just that incumbent property owners can keep new people out. Some people contend that is their right as owners but that's a rationalization because everybody has to deal with the externalities a gigantic housing shortage causes.
I wish they would just own their position. They don’t care that they are causing homelessness. Anti-regulation conservatives want the government to regulate housing to the extent that it causes mass homelessness. They don’t want to admit it because admitting it makes them look bad, but that’s what they want.
They won’t say that though because they know the results of their preferred policies are monstrous.I would respect the honesty of "I want what I want and fuck everybody else I don't care if they struggle and/or die". It's reprehensible but truthful.
or their mothers drank and used hard core drugs while they were in the womb. all legitimate possibilities. It explains why conservatives think they never lose elections fairly. They think everyone secretly agrees with them and are unable to understand why they keep losing. They keep losing because they are delusional.
you expect too much from a group of voters who think the meal team six band of pussies are "badass"I would respect the honesty of "I want what I want and fuck everybody else I don't care if they struggle and/or die". It's reprehensible but truthful.
NYT has some figures.Yeah but the bolded is right wing propaganda and you repeat uncritically. A lot of numbers were mentioned in the article indicating there were tens of thousands of migrants coming into New York, can you find a credible citation for that because the article provided none. In fact, the article was very light on facts and heavy on anecdotes and the articles it linked to were also light on actual facts.
Not that all these migrants received one-way bus tickets from Greg Abbott. I believe there is some reporting of that elsewhere:For several nights last week, New York City’s migrant crisis seemed to have passed a breaking point: As many as 300 newly arrived migrants were left to sleep on the sidewalk outside the main processing center in Midtown Manhattan.
Mayor Eric Adams said the city had simply run out of room in its sprawling, ever-growing network of emergency shelters, after receiving nearly 100,000 immigrants since last year. Images of men crammed behind metal barricades in a line that wound around a Manhattan block drew comparisons to migrant surges that have overwhelmed the streets of European countries and chaotic tent cities on the West Coast.
But by the end of the week, the overnight line had disappeared.
So where has the city been putting everyone? That remains a bit of a mystery.
I mean it’s Staten Island. The very idea of brown people existing enrages them.
It’s always funny to me that here all people can talk about is how expensive housing is and then when you suggest expanding the supply they are horrified. As a former New Yorker, New Yorkers only have themselves to blame for the anemic housing development and underbuilding of shelters for the past 40 years.
But the next best time to fix this problem is to open the flood gates and start building now.
"My house should be the last one built." or "My purchasing of this one property means I get a say in how nearby properties are or are not developed further."It’s always funny to me that here all people can talk about is how expensive housing is and then when you suggest expanding the supply they are horrified.
For some weird reason everyone understands the basic law of supply and demand but so many think it magically doesn’t apply to houses.
What they really mean is they are afraid that poor people and/or minorities will move in. They aren’t wrong either - if only one area legalizes housing for poor people that’s where the poor people will go."My house should be the last one built." or "My purchasing of this one property means I get a say in how nearby properties are or are not developed further."
My parents used to live on Long Island, and over the years, the smaller post-war homes in their neighborhood were being torn down to make giant mcmansions that could house 3 generations, and have 3-4 cars per household. That was apparently okay with people in the town, but the moment you suggest that someone be allowed to tear down their post-war home and build a duplex, triplex, or just a simple 2-unit townhouse, people would lose their mind about "the character of the neighborhood."
Who has advocated for open borders. Maybe you don't say shit that isn't true?I guess it makes me a bad person for deriving some small amusement from the situation. Lots of people want open borders as long as all those foreigners don't end up in their state.
Just for the official record, nimbyism is not only perfectly normal, it's rational, logical, and desirable.
2.76 million undocumented immigrants entered the U.S. in 2022. That's an open border.Who has advocated for open borders. Maybe you don't say shit that isn't true?
And under trump border crossings were higher than under Obama.2.76 million undocumented immigrants entered the U.S. in 2022. That's an open border.
You didn't answer my question. Who advocated for open borders? What we have between PA and NJ is an open border.2.76 million undocumented immigrants entered the U.S. in 2022. That's an open border.
2.76 million undocumented immigrants entered the U.S. in 2022. That's an open border.
So we were able to count them because the border is so open?2.76 million undocumented immigrants entered the U.S. in 2022. That's an open border.
It’s those damn complete facts instead of a snippet that always trips them up.This is a figure for crossings not individuals. Title 42 caused an explosion of repeat crossings as people were ejected.
You've got to laugh* when conservatives start bleating about "open borders" again, when it's conservatives who want to pay the least for labour, devalue public services as much as possible such as education (which ensures that more immigrants are needed, not fewer) while also taking great joy in demonizing and torturing the same immigrants they try to attract.
* laugh / cry / wonder "what the fuck is wrong with you people"
