GENEVA ? American workers stay longer in the office, at the factory or on the farm than their counterparts in Europe and most other rich nations, and they produce more per person over the year.

They also get more done per hour than everyone but the Norwegians, according to a U.N. report released Monday, which said the United States "leads the world in labor productivity."

It means we spend a large amount of time trying to fix things with no idea of what the problem is to begin with.

So, yes...I agree with you.

Fox News, being present in the office != productivity. ATOT is a prime example of that.

I am not suprised at all. Having dealt with my European counterparts, I know that there is very little sense of urgency in their culture.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. If you operate efficiently there should be no need for urgency. If you are always putting out fires then I'd argue that you aren't operating efficiently.

I do agree from what I have seen Americans are harder working than European countries on average. However asian countires take the cake I think, Japanese, Chinese, and Indian people I think are definitely harder working. Its all to do with the cultures though, in Europe you have alot of socialist or at least very liberal countries and they subsidize laziness alot with large handouts to the unemployed, and labor laws that favor the workers. In The USA this is not so much the case, the minimum wage and welfare is really not enough to live any type of decent living on, so you are very motivated to work harder. However there is still some level of people feeding off the government and also societally laziness is seen as some type of "sickness" where its not really your fault that you are lazy, you are jsut born that way and its who you are. All the asian kids I've met would be more or less disowned by their parents if they didn't work hard whereas I see tons of American parents still paying for their 24 year old kids to go back to the sixth year of undergraduate education. Also I beleive asian governemnts operate on a similar principle and frown very bandly on those who are lazy, so there is a good amount of motivation to work.

Really I think all races are 95% exactly the same and ALMOST every difference between different races and countires is due to the culture and not the genetics of the race. Unfortunately some countries (like the USA and even worse Europe) are coasting on the achievements of their forefathers while others (like China and many East Asian countires) are actively bring themselves up form the third world. If this continues it is only a matter of time before they pass the Western world (although as counties advance they also tend to get more lazy, I ahve seen about obesity now being a huge problem in the Chinese upper class like it is in the USA now).

God I'm sick of Norwegians getting the spotlight. We Swedes are the mother of the Viking races, who gives a care (yes, I said it) what the Norwegians are doing? They used some swinely tomtrickery to inflate that number, anyway.

Most Europeans would see us as work-a-holics.

Sure they don't make as much a year as us but their cost of living is MUCH less than ours.

This seems to be a little confusing. Just because we are in the office longer doesn't mean we are as productive, but then it says we are producing more per hour~~ then again its an average.

While we can't take them as absolute (especially when the spread is <1 dollar), its an indication that sub saharan Africa is really in the shitter if its only 1/12 as productive...

Same here. I read somewhere that the average office worker does less than 4 hours of actual work per 8 hour day. I'm pretty sure meetings were excluded from the "actual" work time.

6/10 of the highest "Cost of Living" cities in this Chart for Cost of Living are in Europe. 0/10 are in the U.S. Of course, the chart is probably limited.

Remember, that's measuring productivity in dollar amounts...which means that sub-saharan Africa lacks investment, infrastructure, training, and basically everything else, not that they're lazy.

I haven't been impressed with Chinese IT workers so far. Their corporate culture seems to be even more mired with bureaucracy than the US is, and it often takes weeks of approvals just to get anything started.

The guys from India seem to be more eager to get start working, but they often seem to be missing some required skills to get the job done. They also like passing the buck onto their US supervisors when things go wrong.

The IT folks from Brazil that I had the misfortune of working with were just useless. Not only didn't they not only know anything they needed to know, but they couldn't be bothered with learning it. Some of them were so lazy that didn't even bother e-mailing back when I asked for status updates. Every one that I've dealt with so far was fired within six months. Perhaps my luck has been bad with them so far.

Most of my fellow US workers that I work with are hard workers, although many of them overload themselves to the point where they start overlooking details and produce sloppy work. Others have mastered the art of pretending to be busy while taking credit for the work of others... I'd imagine that you'll find some of that in every geography, though.

If dollaramount generated per hour is the definition of productivity, then it doesnt say much. especially not when comparing different brands or industries let alone countries.

Example: a gold mine mines gold. Lets say, by some market magic (like a new important technology demanding vast amounts of gold) the gold price doubles. That would mean the workers who still mine the same amount of gold per hour suddenly double their productivity even though the amount of gold produced and the labor involved to do that stays the same....
