Here in Crook Co, we literally have high persistent young black male unemployment. Here is the insane part: I live in an area that is much more Black than Hispanic (not to say there aren't Hispanic parts, but, it's mostly Black). Despite this, when I'm out and about and I see work crews, who do I see doing all the work? Almost all Hispanic. It is F'ing insane. Something so low skill as lawn care, they've got Hispanics out there. Stripping roofs...Hispanics. Framing...White and Hispanic. Drywall...White and Hispanic. And on and on... I think you are right, we've hit the point where the illegal invasion and the exploitation of that illegal invasion has become so commonplace, we're now seeing in the Midwest what the mental giants in CA have been seeing for years. We bemoan there are no jobs for these young Black (or White) men, and yet, look at all these jobs being performed by illegals. Apparently, making money via manual labor is a job unemployed Black and White people just won't do...???

EXACTLY. Everyone who ever held a shovel on a job site knows that Mexican transplants will work themselves to death every day for a buck fiddy. Even legal immigrants on work visas do not command a citizen salary. The Hispanics cornered the labor market and they set the prices now. It's called CAPITALISM and the market is working as designed. If you don't like what the job pays, get a new job! Don't understand why people feel they are owed something in a capitalist society that is entirely built around "pulling yourself up". When I could no longer maintain decent employment as a laborer in the trades due to the influx of Hispanic laborers I didn't cry like a pussy. I went back to school and got a desk job. There is work out there for you. Go find it.

This doesn't mean that I don't support rigorous screening and deporting of illegal aliens because I do. I also certainly support government regulations to crack down on contractors using illegals especially. Not immigrants, just illegals. Rules are rules. The legal migrant workers and the children born into this BS that have never even been to Mexico should not be deported or stripped of visas and if they want to work the fields, cut the grass, and clean the toilets we should encourage it. Just like they won't deport Christian Iraqis they should also make other exemptions where the letter of the law violates the spirit of the law and as was pointed out elsewhere clearing the fields of migrant workers is not going to help the hardest hit parts of the country anyhow.

My family has been fruit farmers in the West (western slope of CO into UT) for the better part of a century. My own father grew up as a fruit farmer until he was drafted, got an education and moved to Denver and became an engineer, escaping the hard life of the farm. My grandfather farmed until he died.

My greats endured considerable hardships in migrating to the west in the 19th century and making a life in the rural West way before the modern machinery and convinces available today.

Fortunately, the only experience I've had of hard outdoor labor was a summer I spent on my uncle's landscaping company and a time working on a ranch.

There I saw just how hard the Mexicans worked, and what they had to do to come to this country, leaving families behind, to even get the opportunity at work all the gringos turned down. It was hard work in the hot sun, I hated it and resolved to go to college to never have to do it as a living. Even then I've migrated around the country as career demanded.

Watching the Mexicans unload a truck of sod at a running pace in 100* heat, and lay it out in record time showed how AWESOME these guys were and the respect they deserved for what they do and what they bring.

I also saw how the gringos couldn't hack it. Almost without fail the white guys would complain, work slow, and quit within a short amount of time. Same experience on my relative's farms in the modern day.

So yeah, I do have critical judgement for those that complain about their lot, blame the Mexicans for all their troubles, but do nothing to improve themselves, and instead idle their days doing drugs and daydreaming for jobs that are never coming back
Want to kick the Mexicans out? Fine, come show you can leave your homes, go to the work that needs doing, and bust your ass to build a better life for your kids. Now in all fairness, just because racists get riled up by something doesn't mean it's untrue, so let's evaluate the truth of your statements. First, illegal immigrants are typically hired under the table by smaller operations since most larger corps aren't risking the exposure, and the products of their labor are typically consumed by middle america instead of just the upper crust, so "exploited for the benefit of one percenters" is untrue. It's also largely untrue that low end labor funds higher ed, esp given how the US has one of the lowest intragenerational social mobility rates among its peers. You have those conservative colleagues to thank for that.

However there's some truth to the notion that illegal immigrants compete on the very lowest end against native labor, same as all immigrants against their native counterparts. If you wish to discuss the particular economics of this, feel free, but let's not pretend the mass of racists hating on indigenous looking hispanics have much to do with nuanced policy matters. Keep in mind that's a statement backed by empirical research of the levels of race resentment correlated with areas most effected by economic migration.

If the answer is no then our differences regarding minimum wage are of degree, not kind.

If the business cannot survive without paying wages below what the labor market demands, then that business should fail. Either the product will disappear (e.g. buggy whips), that business will be replaced by one that is more efficient (perhaps automated), that product will be provided from very poor nations, or the price of its products should increase until it reaches equilibrium with the market. I can understand setting minimum wages - we need work to pay, and since people with low job skills cannot sustain themselves by working they will be a burden on society as either a dole recipient or a criminal we can justify distorting the market - but declaring that a job is only worth 'X' amount only serves the resource owner who needs labor. If it is moral to allow and encourage importing illegal labor until we have enough low skills workers to satisfy his needs at the price he feels entitled to pay, then it should be equally moral to simply seize his profit for "the common good" or simply take his land and divide it up into small farms.

I think morally, workers and resource owners have an obligation to respect each other. If the resource owner feels entitled to replace them with cheap illegal labor, then the workers should feel entitled to band together to take his shit.

I largely agree, except I'd add that there are probably 10s of Millions of US Citizens that the Fed and State governments are suppose to be looking out for who aren't capable of doing what you did. They lack the intelligence, motivation, and/or whatever else to get out there and do what needs to be done. These people aren't going away (we all have seen them in high school before going off on our lives, they're the loser who sits around doing nothing, or the loser who thinks everything is a joke, or the loser who thinks he's super smart and is his groups DM but has every excuse why he can't get a job it's the rich Rep fault!, etc), we have to care for them. I'd rather have us take more of a stick approach to these folks but also to employers, because at the end of the day if employing the dumbf*ck Progressive at picking fruit costs a little more, at least that person is actually out earning a living rather than sitting on the public teat. Same for the no opportunity mountain woman who wants to sit on her great grandads land and get public assistance. We don't need to artificially flood the market with illegals because businesses have to deal with these life losers, they're just going to have to suck it up and deal that the fat white guy has to take 8 breaks to the illegals afternoon rest and is going to suck for a while until he gets into a shape other than gelatinous. I haven't had coffee since my first construction job in Chinatown in winter. I don't WTF it is but it makes my stomach almost immediately be in severe pain. I don't have problems getting up in morning or staying awake, so I just forego it. Maybe I should try one of these Starbucks everyone goes to...mocha choco triple expresso or whatever lol...
