Yeah, demo version about sums it up. They list unoptimized network code in the known bugs file. They also require you to complete a multiplayer training level before you can play the other levels. Unfortunately, there only seems to be a few servers with this level with 16 slots each. I'm still trying to get into one of those.

I thought this game was developed by the US Army, for free? From nvidia.com: 'The only thing cooler than the Army building a first-rate, realistic action game is that they're giving it away for free. ' All the mirrors are bogged down though. Looks real good.

This seems to be the demo released so far. But its still going to be free when its released

Need some help with getting up the dedicated servers. No one has released information on how to do it, but someone on the tribalwar.com forums figured it out. Here goes:

Navigate to the System dir of America's Army

Make a copy of Default.ini and rename the copy to hoho.ini

Open hoho.ini and make the following changes:

Find localmap=Entry.aao and change it to localmap=Pipeline.aao (there are a variety of options, look in the map dir for more maps)

Find the line that says ServerActors=UTelnet.TelnetServer and comment it out (add a ; before the line)

Create a batch file in the System directory with the following line: armyops.exe -server ini=hoho.ini

Run the batch file.

Now, this will create a dedicated server which people can (and will, holy f*ck it fills up fast) join. You can further tweak the hoho.ini file to add modify a variety of settings like maxplayers, listings, etc.

To connect to servers people host, pull down the console and type 'open <ip>'

We need some more dedicated servers to play on. Here is the link

If you continue to read the post, it'll give intructions on how to make the server public via Gamespy. When you do this and play MOUT, you will get A LOT of traffic immediately. Being this game is based off UT2003, the .ini setup is quite similar, so anyone with knowledge of UT's dedicated server would definitely be the best bet on getting up a dedicated quickly.

Yeah Im excited about it, running the UT2k3 engine ... thats impressive. I hope my specs will run the game ok .... I have to wait till i return from vacation to sell off this computer for a P4 rig But the best part of this game (other then the sick graphics ) is the Code of Conduct ... it gives games now control of the crap I had to put up with, others spaming and killing team mates ... ect.

I tested out the demo earlier this morning on my rig. For using the UT2k3 engine it didn't seem to use the terrain effects as much as I had hoped (especially after seeing the UT2k3 demos). Still looks pretty nice, much better than CS, as expected for a much later generation game. I tried to get into a multiplayer game but it jumped back to the menu. I'll try it again later today. Anyone else find the GIANT NVIDIA SPLASH SCREEN vaguely annoying? Can't complain with free though... well some people can ;-)

Yeah, but I just edited splash.bmp with my desktop color so I don't even notice it anymore.

That's weird! I don't have that one at all. Did you download from Nvidia's site? I got mine from fileplanet and no splash screen from nvidia for me.

Also, my server is up. My puny 384k upstream somehow has like 473 player connected to it (MaxPlayer is set to 10). Some bug in how people are trying to connect or something. Address is 66.27.219.47:1716

I am also running MOUT_McKenna.aao. Everyone needs to play that map online, it seems.

Well, got some better information on the net as how to setup the dedicated and have settings stick a bit better. Here is the proper link

Anyhow, I turned off the verification if you have qualified or not and start on Insurgent_Camp.aao.

I still see a lot of people connected to my server (at max, over 530+), but that has died down to around 250 (and climbing). Now I belive the values of the MaxClientRate and MaxPlayers are sticking, but I don't think the dedicated server is accurately showing how many people are actually "playing" vs people waiting in line.

I'm anxious to leave here, head home and play some, but nothing I can do now about it. Hopefully, I should have some time tonight to try it out (even if it means I have to kill the server and restart, just for me).

That's a lot of good info Vash, thx.

I see you have done a lot of research on the game already. You probably noticed a lot of people having trouble running the game with d3d errors. In fact, the game runs on my son's comp which runs Win98SE with a GF3 vid card, while the game WON'T run on my similarly powered comp running WinXP Pro with a GF4 Ti4200 vid card. Run across any answers on that?

Thanks again for all that helpful info Vash. I was able to get AAO working on my comp by deselecting enable direct 3d in dxdiag and then re-enabling it.

I was also able to set up a dedicated server and joined it from my LAN. However it appeared that people on the internet could not join it despite my making it available on Gamespy according to your directions.
I assume the problem is with port forwarding on my router. Not sure what ports to forward, but from what I read, it appeared that ports 7777, 8777 and 9777 are involved, so I forwarded all of those.
Any other ideas on ports?

Those are the UT ports, not AA ports. Forward 1716-1718 for net play. If you forward 27900, it'll be advertised on GameSpy.

The port info worked. Heh! Now the server stays at capacity. Now I need to learn the comsole commands for this game engine. Is there a place they are posted?

are you sure it's running the UT2K engine?
I heard that but I also hear it's running a modofied unreal1 engine. Like the one used in UT.

wow this game seems to have some nice graphics, anyone know which engine its based on? okay is anyone having frame rate problems? i'm getting only 40 fps while standing still and 10-20 while in a firefight. i'm currently using a geforce 4 4200 and p4 2.2 ghz. i'm pretty sure i should have higher fps than this. i have the most updated drivers and i'm only running in 1024x768.

It is either the UT or UT2 engine.
It does look good.
What's the command to show FPS?
All players eem to be getting pretty high pings too, above 200.
