I figure me and my wife will be dead and my kids can emigrate to wherever they like. That's the best I have.

I'd move to Europe if I had more money saved up and my fiance was done with school. As it is we are on a 5 year plan. Is that another case in point?

Not a bad idea but the problem of demographics is real. If you haven't settled on a location then you might take that into account when researching as different nations have different projected populations.

Those on the right who don't like non-European immigration to America, they tend to admire Japan for not allowing immigrants and maintaining a homogeneous culture. They believe that too many different types of peoples and cultures lead to problems. But I think that is a somewhat superficial way of looking at things. Diversity does bring new ideas and freshness to a culture.

False. Immigration is the number 1 indication of a leading country. Case in point, why don't you move to Japan? Or any other nation where immogranys don't want to go....exactly.

Surely immogranys are too old to travel much? Unless they want to visit their immogrankids?

And can you give a definition of 'leading country' that justifies your statement and isn't entirely circular?

People don't move to Japan because the Japanese don't seem very keen to let anyone in, plus the language barrier is quite tough, plus it seems to be a fairly closed-society, in terms of jobs and career structures.

The way I see it, immigration is neither good nor bad, it just _is_. It happens, and it's a consequence of other factors, of all sorts of complicated political and historical issues, from wars to empires to inequities of global economics.

If other things were fixed people would no doubt not move about so much. The moving about is not in itself a good or a bad thing, but nor is it a primary issue.

Low wages workers are competing against computers/robots, and that competition is only going to get more and more intense. The need for immigrants to do “jobs Americans won’t” (which I find to be an absurd notion) is becoming less and less.

Bring in numbers won't fix anything if minimum wage is to high to be ecomically viable when competing with machines. It makes the problem worse.

I have no idea how to fix this, or I should say that anything I come up with requires action over decades, which is to say I got nuthin'.

In some industries that time is arriving but in others it hasn't and won't for a while. Haven't developed the robots that can replace a roof on any kind of home or care for an 85 year old person with dementia quite yet.

No idea how to fix this? It is so simple, but requires a big leap. On the plus side, we're being forced to do it rather soon unless we wish to collapse under income inequality and bankruptcy. The fix is to restructure our government to provide Basic Income. As for labor, that's what robots are for. I'll make this clear. We do not need pyramid schemes.

We are scamming ourselves if we think infinite growth is a viable long term solution. We've been milking it for decades, it's time to stop and pay our dues. First by balancing our budget. That's with a proper tax structure. Second, by providing a good return on that investment: Basic Income. Third, labor has already reached the point where it'll find a way. It does not need humans any more. In the coming decades it'll be regressives fighting for laws against automation. Instead, I say we embrace automation. We can revel in increased productivity with LESS labor. And we keep our people participating in the economy by giving them their... fair share.

This is the only economic plan or solution I see going forward. It is also sustainable. It does not depend on or ask for growth. The world does not need any more people and neither does our country.

This can be a demographic disaster, or the dawn of a new age.

What's an immograny? A pontificating grandma? I've studied/worked in Japan. There's plenty of reasons why I haven't immigrated, the difficulty of actually immigrating there being one of the main reasons. However I would love to live there due to how clean and technologically advanced it is.

Immigrants don't want to go to Japan? They reject over 99% asylum seekers.

Immigrants can’t go to Japan, it’s not that none want to.

I just did this since im adopted and know nothing of my real parents etc. Apparently my new story is im roughly 2/3 English and 1/3 German. So i imagine my mother was raped by a Nazi. Better than just saying im a mutt?

Not sure if shithole though.

Not many chances for Germans to rape an English woman.

Lots of cross over in history tho.

A large portion of health care costs are made up of the drugs to extend people's lives as well as the care and facilities to do so. I haven't seen recent figures, but the percentage of cost to keep older, obese Americans going via blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol medications is insanely expensive. Couple that with the fact that many of these people are not saving for retirement and we have some big problems that will only get worse over time. I'm 50, but I take care of myself as does my wife. We are planning for retirement, but I can certainly see where others cannot afford to. We also do not have any children, so we are doing our part to make Idiocracy a reality.
