I'm pretty sure that if I were Mexican, I would be out in the street rioting.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/taco-bell-americas-favorite-mexican-restaurant-153058944.html

Taco Bell is America’s favorite “Mexican restaurant,” according to a new survey.

The fast food chain beat out Chipotle (CMG) and Moe’s Southwest Grill to win “Brand of the Year” for the first time since Harris launched its EquiTrend Study 30 years ago.

The Harris Poll EquiTrend Study measures the overall health of a brand by asking consumers questions based on three variables — familiarity, quality and future consideration. The results are aggregated into a one-number score.

This year, Taco Bell (YUM) surpassed Chipotle and Moe’s Southwest Grill, the latter of which was the Brand of the Year in 2016 and 2017. Prior to that, Chipotle ranked as the No. 1 Mexican restaurant brand, but its standing was severely impacted by various outbreaks of foodborne illnesses. The fast casual and health-conscious chain experienced a 10.7 point drop in 2016 because of the negative sentiment surrounding the brand. Other choices included Qdoba, Baja Fresh and Del Taco.

I don't even consider Taco Bell, Chipotle, QDoba or Taco Time to be "mexican restaurants"... more like crappy fast food with a slight mexican flair.

Last time I trash talked Taco bell, the breakfast club gave me a hard time and lots of shittalking.
They are not mexican food.
I'm not sure if the stuff they sell can realistically be called "food" even.
It's more like edible science experiments.
Also, delicious.

Their so called "Mexican pizza" is pretty tasty.

Meh. It's just as "Mexican" as the other eateries listed, in that they serve tacos and burritos.

I can believe it. There are so many out there that have absolutely no idea of what real food is. The Orange County Register, a paper in our area, does a "Best Of" list. Of course Chipotle has won best Mexican and Olive Garden has won best Italian! Even Subway was voted top 3 sandwich shop.

Not sure if this is sarcasm or ignorance.

Burritos were invented in the US: http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2012/02/15/best-burritos-in-los-angeles/

Mexico has such fantastic food, yet most Americans will never know it as our "Mexican" restaurants are generally not Mexican food.

True, mostly.
If you live in a border state, it's no problem finding the real deal. Further afield it gets tougher, though you can find authentic Mexican restaurants as far away as Minneapolis/St. Paul and Chicago, for example, if you know where to look.

Familiarity was one poll criteria. I don't think anyone's heard of Qdoba, Del Taco, and whatnot. Just Chipotle and Taco Bell, plus all the more regional / local joints like Jalapeno Tree, Posados, Papacitas, Casa Ole, Taco Bueno, etc., etc.

I once ate at Rick Bayless's Frontera Grill in Chicago. Probably the closest that I've had to real Mexican food in the US. Still not the same as what I've had on my vacations there though.

As an off-topic aside, I met President Obama there while he was president. Secret Service swarmed the room and he walked through, shaking everyone's hands.

Familiarity was an important ranking in their poll. So it wasn't really America's Favorite Mexican poll. But more of a brand awareness poll.

That said, there are 700 Qdoba restaurants (I've seen them most often in airports) and nearly 600 Del Taco restaurants. They are fairly well known.

What you're calling the "real deal" is almost certainly still Americanized. I highly doubt you're eating bug tacos, ‎huitlacoche, and pulque or ordering the comida corrida and accepting whatever you get served.

I'd have to admit that the escamole tacos are quite tasty. The ant larva / pupae have a nice nutty flavor and cottage cheese texture. I haven't tried huitlacoche though.

I have a couple Mexican friends who take their visiting family (from Mexico) to Frontera and/or Topolobampo. Last time I went to Frontera a crew from the Mexican consulate had taken over part of the place. Bayless is white as a ghost but his food is legit.

There is lots of more accessible real Mexican food in the city too like Pilsen where you can find a fair number of regional specialties.

I'm not in Chicago very often, but any that you recommend?

Taco Bell is as much a restaurant as Domino's is an Italian restaurant or McDonalds an American style eatery.
It's barely a fast food joint that sells spiced dog food to young people and stoners.

If I want Mexican "fast food" I go to small chain called Green Cactus Grill.
If I want to go to a Mexican restaurant, I go to an actual f00king Mexican restaurant.

My personal likes:

5 Rabanitos
La Casa Del Pueblo
Carnitas Uruapan
Birrieria Reyes

If you're looking for something more specific from Mexican regional cuisine you can generally find it but it takes a bit of hunting.

There are hundreds of "mexican" restaurants in the Chicago area and suburbs. But I go mostly to
El Faro once in a while. I go to the one in Summit. Not the best looking Mexican restaurant, but it's always crowded.
Food it always fresh, and a wide variety of food, drinks and desserts.

I've never been to a Taco Bell or Chipotle.

About once or twice a year, I'll eat at Taco Bell. I like to get couple regular tacos on hard shell. If it was cheaper, I would probably eat there more often. The value isn't there for me when I can get awesome pastor tacos for $1.35 each at local Mexican joint.
