I think you have to sign up for one year though (big deal). It's 768/128 and includes your DSL modem.

Cheap DSL

I've had their service for over a year and find it to be outstanding (only two outages that lasted a couple of hours.) Their tech support isn't all that hot though. One time, their gateway router in Chicago wasn't routing to Amazon.com and all realted sites on the same subnet. I called for three days asking them to fix this, and I got resposes like "Duuuhhh...I can get there, so it must work. I'm not on the same network as you though. Sorry, can't help you." I finally used one of my Oar.net contacts at work to get the problem fixed (working for a large ISP has it's advantages ).

That is a great price.

How come when I click the order now I get sent to a page that doesn't offer that price?

I got in on this deal about a month ago. Ameritech called out of the blue and I asked them how low they could go - $30/month with a one year contract, free equipment/self install is pretty much a no brainer considering I was paying $47/month with ok service for TW cable. While it is not as fast as cable it is definitely more consistent. I no longer get the "after school slowdown" (school kids running home to get on the internet/shared resource) when I am at home around that time. I have yet to do any online gaming but I hear that it is better with DSL.

Hmm, Yeah, it says $49.95 + activation fee ($200).
That is what you get from the order link...

But I found this: Hit the legal link on that bernie page... (btw, where did the link come from?)

"New subscribers only. This offer cannot be used in combination with other offers. Requires one-year contract. $29.95 for the first 12 months; thereafter at the then current month-to-month rate. Early termination fees apply. Order DSL Internet today and receive a free modem, free activation and free self-installation kit. Pricing is based on customer self-install on existing line; minimum charge of $150 applies if technician install is required. If your line is not eligible for self-installation, or if you choose not to self-install, the installation charge is $200. Service not available in all areas. Actual throughput speeds vary. Offer expires 5/15/02 [\B]and is subject to change without notice; other restrictions may apply. DSL Internet billing begins when your service is activated. This information service is provided by SBC Internet Services and combines DSL transport with Internet access. SBC Ameritech is a trademark of SBC Communications Inc. Ã?? 2002 SBC Internet Services. All rights reserved. "

So the offer is DEAD.

It is NOT dead. I just got it! Just mention that you saw the ad on a web page and they give it to you. I just did it two hours ago.

YES!
I had been using the Ameritech DSL for one and half year.
I called them to ask about the plan, and joined without any problem!

Thanks Fritzo...

Strange, I called them and the person I talked to rattled off the $50/month charge. I asked about the $30/month and he told me they do not offer that.

Is this only in some markets? I live in michigan...

I live in Illinois. Called them last Thursday. Took almost 45 minutes cause they have to switch me from MCI to them for local service before they can set me up with DSL. The CS at the other end first told me of the $49/mo deal but I told her that a friend of mine just got it for $29/mo. She went away for a few minutes and came back, giving me the $29 deal with no problem.

Looking forward to it except between the phone service switch and backlog I would not get it until two week from now.

For those of you that don't know, Bernie refers to Bernie Kosar (ex Cleveland Brown quarterback). He's the new pitch man for Ameritech DSL.

Try DSL Extreme if you're in Cali AND have PacBell or Verizon.. They get lots of great user reviews at DSLReports.com..

I just started this plan this month:

384-1500 down / 128 up
1st 3 months 29.95/m.. 49.95 after (1 year contract)
They also gave me 4th month free cuz I didn't need a modem from them. (nothing special.. that's their policy)

Speed wise.. I'm getting steady 1315 down and 110 up... pretty cool comparing to my old crappy pacbell DSL which only gave me around 330 down.

EDIT: Oh yeah!.. and no more PPPoE!! no more freakin log-ins.. O and no activation fees..

Great price. This is probably the lowest you are going to find. I have heard pretty good things from SBC DSL. Too bad I can't get it since it is not available in my area.

I just signed up for this. The only problem so far is that they said it would take 2 weeks in between when my phone is connected and when the DSL starts. They said they have to "test" the line before the DSL will work. This seems silly, especially considering the people who lived in the apartment before me had DSL... oh well.

Be thankful...it used to be 4-8 weeks! They're really getting a lot better... 2 weeks is pretty fast.

So this rate is only good for one year? I ask because while I have high speed internet at college, my parents could use it at home. But they would be rather mad if after a year they had to then pay $50 a month. Anyway to lock in this cheap monthly rate?

One time, their gateway router in Chicago wasn't routing to Amazon.com and all realted sites on the same subnet

did you try forcing DNS in your tcp/ip settings. if the DNS server your're using is down, then have them give you IPs for anthoer set of DNS servers.

good answer, but i guess that's irrelevant now, since Ameritech DSL is supposed to be DHCP and automatic DNS, or so they tell me

i just signed up for a year. it'll take little over 2 weeks. i actually did this from a flyer, rather than this forum.. they also offer a cheap bundled package called "economy solution" 400 calls month, (call waiting) caller id (if you ask for it), call waiting, line backer, 30min free inter LATA for 29.99

i think it's dumb to have to wait 2 weeks for them to add your dsl modem info into the system, so it'll be recognized on their network. how about i get the modem, and i'll call the number w/ my modem's serial. then you can activiate it right then and there! but like someone said, it's better than 8 weeks.. i have cable mo now, so i'm gonna compare which is faster, and choose the faster one. ameritech DSL does come w/ 30 day moneyback guarantee, mind as well use it.

It wasn't a DNS problem, it was a routing problem. A tracert showed that requests to Amazon's IP address were being bounced back and forth in an endless loop when they hit Chicago. If it were a DNS problem, I wouldn't be able to get there by typing in the URL, but I could if I typed in Amazon's IP address.

NO, sure you can. But you need to have no any contract with SBC.
After a year $49.95/month contract , I signed up another year contract with SBC for $29.95/month.
Just took me 2 minutes to make a phone call.
