ameritech dsl + pppoe + linux = huh????

i have ameritech dsl, which uses pppoe. i've read through tons of howto's/walk-through's in regard to setting up a pppoe connection, but nothing is working. i've also tried using roaring penguin, but still no luck. for all i can tell, ameritech is using some non-standard pppoe setup that i can't connect to. i'm getting activity on the dsl modem, just not authenticating my connection correctly. ameritech gave me "EnterNet" for the windows (win 2k) setup, which works fine. i see that the company that produces this software (Efficient networks) also produces the client in linux form, anyone tried this? it's $30 and i'd rather not have to pay more for this connection. has anyone successfully setup an ameritech dsl line on a linux box?

PPPOE is built into many newer distros... I believe its in Redhat 7.3 and above for sure... The HOWTO's were mostly written before it was included in any distro.. I think RedHat 7.3 even will walk you thorugh the setup on install...there is also a new gui for setting it up in RedHat.

i *think* i've got everything setup like i should, i'm just wondering if anyone here has had luck w/ ameritech on a linux box. doing google searches comes up with plenty of people asking how to get ameritech working, but no one claiming to have set it up sucessfully.

I had ameritech DSL working in linux for over a year. I just used the roaring penguin software. I believe the trick was your username had to be like mindwarp@ameritech.net, but its been awhile since I had DSL (FYI ameritech DSL is absolutely horrible compared to cable, atleast in the detroit area). I was consistently getting 30% packetloss on the line, and it was only 128k/768k (which means it uploads at 15k/s, downloads at around 90k/s, whereas cable I upload at 45k/s, and download at above 300k/s.) A bit offtopic, but useful if you have a decent cable company in your area (or SDSL provider, although still not providing the downstream througoput, provides a better ping and usually static ips).
